Civic DX-VP 1.7L

  • 125,000 miles

Love this car, but its extremely embarrassing to drive when it sounds like this. I've maintained a pristine interior and exterior, and completed all scheduled maintenance. It is in absolutely perfect condition other than this defect. Sad that I want to sell it only due to this issue.

Civic EX 1.7L I4

  • Manual transmission
  • 92,600 miles

So pathetic that a 2004 honda civic with just 92,600 miles has a bad input shaft bearing! From research online it appears there are thousands with this same issue on the civic from late 90's to 2005 models. Called Honda and they said no recall on my VIN... really??? Why is the recalls of this problem on VIN only and not an entire year? Too costly? Well hell, I will remember that when buying another car!!

Civic EX 1.7L

  • Manual transmission
  • 98,000 miles

Have been hearing what i thought was lifters in the engine bay turn out to be the input shaft bearing and other bearings inside transmission per my local Honda dealership.Dealership quoted me $1000-$1800 but couldn't tell me for sure until they opened up the transmission and saw what else may need to be replaced/rebuild transmission.I can hear the noise only in gear and when moving in 1st - 3rd gears.Have had all my servicing done at my local dealership and done on time.I have had many Hondas and never given me any problems with such low mileage.Looked into it online and there's lots of people with the same issue.Honda should make things right with their consumers.

Civic VP Coupe 1.7L

This is problem that I never thought I'd get on a Honda just because it looks like is a pain to fix and a shop or a dealer will charge you rediculous amount of money for a $30 dollar part.

Civic EX 1.7L

  • Manual transmission
  • 110,000 miles

Hello,

I bought my car back in May 24th, 2013. When I purchased the car, 2004 Honda Civic EX 4 dr manual transmission, I noticed a sort of grinding sound in the front of the car. I noticed that the car had had an accident on the right side of the car from when the dealer bought the car. I thought from the repair the sound must of been from the mud guard due to the noice coming from down there. I thought the sound was coming from some sort of rubbing from metal to plastic maybe the cover between the tire and the bumper. I was told by them it was nothing to worry about. I test drove the car around and it ran perfectly fine except for that noise. I didn't pay any attention to it and I purchased the car due to me being in need of a car and it would be the only thing I could get into with a payment plan, refinanced and what not. This noise has not gone away, even after taking the covers off and rotating tires and all of that.

I asked a mechanic to check it out. He told me that it was not the clutch. The gears changed perfectly and the clutch pedal and system was fine. He stated that it was from the transmission where the problem exists. He stated he did not know exactly what it was that he would need to check it more carefully. I don't have the money to put into it at this time. He said that it would be a hefty amount to fix what it was. Whether it was the input shaft bearings or something like that. He said to first check the oil and fill it up if its not at level. But, that car needs to be mounted and lift up to check the level, as that car does not have a dipstick for the oil level. So I would have to pay someone to put it on the lift and check it for me. I do not have the money for that either at this time. Basically, what ever I do with this car will involve some work in which I do not have for to spend as I am still making payments on this car plus full coverage insurance. Money is really tight. I can't believe I have to pay someone just to check the transmission oil level because the car needs to be picked up from the ground just to check it. That's crazy..

Civic LX

  • Manual transmission
  • 136,000 miles

After 136000 my bearings went out on my transmission (according to the dealer anyway). Apparently the solution is $1400 to get a used/rebuilt transmission. Seems like that should not happen on a 9 year old car, but then, what do I know?

Civic EX 1.7L

  • Manual transmission
  • 114,743 miles

So I love the car, it's the newest car I have ever owned. I have always loved Honda's. So I spent my hard earned money, and bought what I thought was a great car. 04 Honda Civic Ex manual trans ,and I love 5 speeds because of low maintenance. It only has 114,000 miles on it ,and I thought it was just the THROW OUT BEARING going out making the noise. But it is just getting worse and mainly 1st-3rd gear 1st and 2nd make odd noise and 3rd I have to ease into so that it doesn't grind. Very annoying and worried some thing is going to break. Had it checked out and they said the THROW OUT BEARING may make noise sorta like that ,but they said it's more symptoms of the INPUT SHAFT BEARING going out. It just really pisses me off ,I have never had any problem of the sorts with any Honda that I have ever owned. I just hope there are more recalls out there for this problem because this is B.S. Hope I can get it fixed soon!

Civic EX 1.7L V4

I just recently bought this car from a used car lot. I got an inspector to check it out to make sure everything was fine. He said the car had no signs of an accident and even looked better than its age. One day i'm driving and I get this noise. It's even worse now. I need it replaced.

Civic EX 1.7L

  • Manual transmission
  • 107,000 miles

I am having great difficulty understanding how this problem has not been officially recognized by Honda as something to take seriously.

My input shaft bearing went out 3000 miles after my warranty was up. I still haven't had it fixed because I don't have the available funds for a ~$2000 service.

It's getting worse and is starting to wobble as I accelerate.

Frustrated.

Civic LX 1.7L

  • 149,000 miles

I have an 04 civic lx and after hours of scanning the internet I'm getting answers, but they contradict each other. I have an clicking/rattling noise when my foot is off my clutch- a weird rattling. When I put it in gear and accelerate through them (mostly just gears 1-3) I'll get a weird clicking/rattling noise after about 2k rpms. I've had people tell me its both my input shaft bearing and throwout bearing. It's b*ll S$!T that i buy a vehicle to take me on my long commutes and now i gotta worry about the these input shaft bearings going bad on me.... Looking for some sort of recall on this because i've heard its out there.

At 6x,xxx miles I shouldn't be having to take the clutch out of my civic. Isn't that what I bought a civic for?

This sound is so embarrassing I don't want to drive anyone around. Dates? Not until I fix this crap.

Civic DX 1.7L

  • Manual transmission
  • 60,100 miles

I noticed a loud gear whine in my manual transmission. It seems to be louder in like 3rd gear then any of the others. I can hear it sometimes in other gears. I haven't taken it to a shop but I'm sure it won't be cheap. You think a Civic with 60k miles wouldn't have transmission problems especially a Honda. I have heard of recall but I think it's certain V#'s. This is my first Honda and probably my last if this turns out bad.

Civic LX 1.7L

  • Manual transmission
  • 110,000 miles

I change my trani fluid regularly at home. The mechanic said it will be $3500 to fix. He also said it would have gone out any way because Honda switched to this cheap transmission in the mid 1990's. I drive my car like a baby. I don't grind gears. I don't have $ to fix it. I need my car to get to work. This is not fair of Honda to do this to us. I love how Hondas drive, but I think my next car will be a Toyota grandma car, darn it.

Details: Constant grinding when driving and idling. Grinding stops when the clutch is engaged. Grinding sounds awful scarry when down shifting. Some times it's difficult to get into gear, have to ease it in. I'm waiting for my trani to fall out at any time!

I'm stuck in town, afraid to leave town in fear of breaking down & being stuck with no where to go and no $ to fix it.

I called the Honda customer service line (800)999-1009. The assistant said they have had some recalled '04 Civics for the input shaft bearing but not many. My VIN shows no recall. SO WE NEED TO START COMPLAING because mine is not the only '04 Civic with this problem. '04 Civic owners have input shaft bearing complaints & questions all over the internet and youtube. COMPLAIN HERE PEOPLE!
