Civic LX 1.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 153,000 miles

Love this car to death, first ever civic wish I would have known these year Hondas have tranny issues, anyways I had to replace the entire transmission. I found a place that sells used one cheap so grabbed one there found a family friend mechanic swapped it fairly cheap, car runs good now all I can say is when you feel it jerk on second gear when its cold since these cars are known for that let off the gas around second ease into the gear let the transmission warm up. If you go all race car then your going to burn tranny faster, idk might sell this car I'm not sure I got 150,000 miles and it runs so good, another issue with these d17 engines is spark plugs and ignition coils tend to go bad, I have to swap mine smh 50$ a coil!!! expensive, but worth it since these engines are known to get to 250,000 miles. Any tips on this car would be nice just thought I'd share my EM2 experience.

Civic EX 1.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 123,500 miles

I have a 2004 Honda Civic EX 1.7 L engine with a BMXA transmission. I was driving the car to Glendale when in town the car's transmission started jerking. Shortly after the engine light came on and I was trying to go up a hill to a friends house and it wouldn't go into gear. The car started revving all over the place while I was on a hill and almost crashed in cars parked on the road because I couldn't control the car! I was very unlucky because I was on a very tight hilly road with cars parked on the road a virtually no space to maneuver the car. I had to block the road and blocked cars from passing by because there was only space for one car passing by. I had to wait 30 min blocking traffic until my friends came to help me push the car to a spot where we could park the car and leave it there and get it out of the way! IT WAS A NIGHTMARE! Also because I live in Fullerton and Glendale is over 1 hour away! We had to leave it there to figure out what to do. Didn't have any issues up till then. Engine is strong but transmission completely blew out in the span of 15 min! I got so lucky it didn't brake on the highway on my way to Glendale or I would have been in serious danger in highway traffic. The car has only 123,000 miles on it, transmission fluid has been changed at its intervals. Sounds insane that a transmission would go out that early. If the dealer won't fix it for me for free I would basically have to toss the car because its not worth repairing the transmission and might as well buy a new car. Honda better help me out with this or I'm just gonna buy a Toyota.

  • 151,476 miles

Was driving thru an intersection, came to a complete stop then proceeded thru intersection and car stopped. Thought maybe it had slipped into neutral but it did not. Car will not move forward or backwards. I was at a complete stop in the middle of the intersection, all fluids checked and were full. I had to push car from middle of intersection then have it towed. There was no grinding of gears at any time, no smoke from anywhere, was running fine, just in drive slowed and even when I hit gas would not go anywhere. Could of been much more serious or life threatening in the middle of an intersection. Honda really needs to do a recall on their transmissions, as I have read that this is happening to often.

Civic LX

  • Automatic transmission
  • 168,600 miles

After the car began to run hot - the needle would go to HIGH any time I had the heat on, the dashboard died while driving and I didn't know how fast I was going. I took it to a mechanic who charged me over $300 for a new thermostat, new cooling sensor and labor at over $100 per hour! I was told I had a motor oil leak and a power steering fluid leak.

I took it to my regular mechanic to fix the motor oil part. Buying parts at O'Reilly is more affordable as other mechanics "Pad" the cost of parts and usually charge double. They pay their mechanics about $15-$20 an hour but charge you over $100! My mechanic fixed this issue but said the Power Steering fluid wasn't leaking, just needed a new clamp. What was leaking had to do with the Transmission. I was without my car for almost 2 weeks.

After trying to rebuild it, the casing was so damaged I needed a whole new transmission! I was told that this model has some type of Inner Filter that cannot be gotten to. Once it clogs, it actually causes the heating that damages the transmission! What kind of design is this? After paying out an additional $2500, I did research to find out that this is a KNOWN problem and HONDA not only does nothing to fix it, will not pay for repairs, they continue to put the same faulty design in their vehicles. I saw that there had been some Class Action Lawsuits in the past and I hope I can join an open one. Any information on one would be welcome. I will never buy another Honda.

Following the repair, I took a trip farther away from my home - about 35 miles away only.

On the way back, on the Freeway where it connects with another freeway and I could not exit - the transmission started to fail!!! It began to Rev but did not accelerate - like I was in neutral. I was so scared.

It finally got up to 65 and I made it to my exit, but with traffic lights, stopping and decelerating the motor sounded like it was going to blow up. The Engine light came on and while I made it home, I had to take it back to the mechanic after having it back one day. I am waiting to hear what is wrong with it now.

  • 74,551 miles

So disappointed in Honda, i have read all the complaints and Honda is not holding up their end of the deal on repairs of bad transmissions.. this is my 5th Honda and up until now i was happy but at 74,551 I need a new transmission, at least a $ 3,500.00 repair. My car is in excellent condition even the original car mats are still in

place and looking great....all this and the damn car wont move, all dressed up and no where to go just because Honda chose to install a cheep ass transmission to save them thousands of dollars but will charge the working gal thousands to repair their mistake and from what i have read the replacement is just as cheep and wont last.

My daughters now also own Honda's because that's what i owned while they were growing up, i always thought they were reliable, safe car's for me and my daughters to travel in but not anymore,...if Honda does not pay for my repair in full i will strongly encourage them, friends and family to sell or trade their vehicle's in.

I have been a dedicated customer to Honda for more that half my life, lets see how dedicated Honda is to the customer.

Engine light went on on 6/8/15 and I noticed the engine roaring and sounding like it was unable to shift gears in the automatic transmission. Mechanic states a valve in the transmission is faulty and the whole transmission should be replaced as valves are not replaceable in Hondas. New one would cost approx $2500 and a rebuilt one would cost approx $1600. I don't have that kind of money so went online and found there was a transmission recall that included this make/model/year of Honda. Not sure where to go from here. This is my son's car which he needs to drive to/from work. Now he's using my car and I can't be without a car.

Civic DX 1.7L 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 178,673 miles

I was going across the the Harbour bridge in Saint John NB when my car, out of nowhere, the rpms went from 2500 right up to 6000. I dropped it down to d3 and still nothing. Then to 2nd gear with nothing, just high revs. This is a 70 km two lane bridge very dangerous place for this to happen. All I could do was coast. I put my 4way flashers on and stared to decelerate. Luckily, I coasted off the bridge with a few a-holes honking at me and flipping me off. When I had made it to the end, there was a long hill off ramp that I had got stuck on and almost rear ended. Thankfully the man helped me get the car off the road and I had it towed home. Haven't been able to get it fixed, as its a very complicated job to do at home and costs so much for a rebuild.

I can get a transmission for $300 used but $85 an hr to have it installed. Quoted a 6.5 hour job if all goes well, but still nothing I can afford to do at this moment. I need my car to get my daughter around I am hoping there is some way this could be covered by Honda, as its a very dangerous problem to be having. I've read a lot about these years having a very cheap transmission ....

My car still new to me even if it is nine years old and only has 77,000 mile on it. It had a slipping problem in my transmission and was told to change the fluids and it should be correct . It worked for a block and then started slipping again. This has to be a problem with which Honda should have a recall on this TRANSMISSION being that it is an on going problem with the 2004. My Mister Blue should not be needing a new or rebuild transmission with miles like this.

SO HONDA PLEASE RECALL AND FIX THE PROBLEM WITH THE TRANSMISSIONS IN THE 2004. I TRUSTED THAT THIS WAS A GOOD CAR TO NOW BE LET DOWN.

I THINK HONDA SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS PROBLEM. IT SEEMS THAT ITS A DEFECT IN THEIR AUTOMOBILE, SO HONDA I'M ASKING YOU THE COMPANY TO PLEASE FIX MY VEHICLE. I'M A 52 YEAR OLD FEMALE AND BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO HAVE OR CAUSE AND ACCIDENT WHICH COULD BE FATAL TO ME OR SOME ONE ELSE.

I KNOW THAT YOU THE COMPANY HAVE GOTTEN PLENTY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION IN THIS 2004 HONDA CIVIC MODEL VEHICLE. I HAVE READ PLENTY OF THEM ON LINE AND I KNOW YOU ALL HAVE TO. SO PLEASE TAKE RESPONSIBILITY AND FIX MY VEHICLE AND ANY MORE THAT NEED IT, IT IS BETTER THAN HEARING SOMEONE HAS HAD A BAD INJURY OR EVEN A FATALITY BECAUSE OF THIS PROBLEM, WHEN IT COULD HAVE BEEN TAKEN CARE OF BY YOU THE COMPANY.

I ALSO SEE SOME OTHER COMPLAINTS WITH THIS VEHICLE WHICH YOU THE COMPANY HAVE DONE A RECALL ON, SO PLEASE DO THE RECALL ON THIS TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. IT'S THE RIGHT THING TO DO. THANK YOU.

With this year's Civic, I have heard that Honda has started using cheaper parts or cheaper transmissions altogether. This should not happen to a transmission with 140,000 miles on it. My father is in the used-car business. I see cars, hundreds of them, with over 250,000 miles and the trans is perfect. Cars driven under normal conditions, like i had the entire time i owned the car, should not have these problems. Please, I have heard there is some sort of recall on it. I'm a young pilot, trying to make it in the airline world, and having this problem with my transportation is terrible and extremely annoying. If my vin number falls into this recall category please help. I need help bad, THANK YOU

Civic EX V4

I have been continously getting the problems with the transmission every now and then starting sept 2010. I have been doing regular servicing at American Service station. But everytime the problem was something different that caused the transmission to fail.

The worst was when it came without any warning when i was on my way back from airport after picking up my family. I was merging on to 85N in atlanta when suddenly the gears dis-engaged and the car was slowly loosing speed. I was lucky to move over to the shoulder without causing any damage. But the car would not engage and had to tow my car back. The worst part was that after the long flight (24hrs) i had to ask my family members to walk to the nearest ramp to get a taxi back home. This was just horrifying and with a Brand like Honda, this should not have happened.

The other 2 times, i had to forfiet my reservation and cancel my travel plans midway through the journey because the car engine light went off and the gears went bonkers. they were changing on their own and also reving up every now and then. This was very frustrating

I don't understand how this problem isn't a recall and is not considered dangerous. I was on a major road and all of a sudden, the car started to slow down, like it was in neutral. I was giving it gas and nothing. The cars behind me were up my ass and beeping their horns!

I had to immediately put on my hazard lighs so they would know there was a problem. He had to swerve around me or he would have hit me. I was lucky to find myself in front of a car dealership. I was pushed into the dealership by the workers. Now from this website I understand Honda will charge me over $2000. This is bull. This needs to be a recall because it is very dangerous and a saftey issue.I don't have this kind of money. I don't even know what to do

This is my third Honda now and up until this point I have been pretty happy and they have a great reputation of "lasting forever." There is just no reason for a gear to crack all of the way thru. The Transmission shop manager told me in 15 years he had never seen anything like this especially in a Honda. he said that no transmission gear should crack like this even at 150,000 miles let alone at 60,000. He said that it was clearly a defect in manufacturing and that there is no amount of rough driving that caused this. he said he had seen cars that were forced into reverse that messed up transmissions but caused gear teeth to bust but not the entire thick metal cog to fracture all the way through.
