Civic LX R18 1.8L I4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 43,000 miles

Both front wheel bearings started to fail, and made a very loud and annoying whining noise at speeds over 50 mph. I had them replaced and was amazed at how much quieter my car was. At first, I didn't notice because the problem surfaced itself gradually. I thought it was just my tires getting old, but when I went to get them replaced, the mechanic told me the wheel bearings needed to be replaced.

It's an annoying problem for a car to have at this mileage. I drove them like this for another 8,000 miles before they got so annoying that I had to replace them.

I've never had to replace wheel bearings on a car before. They shouldn't ever fail.

I bought this car used/new, it only had 2,600 miles. At around 15k miles the front driver side wheel bearing needed to be replaced. I heard a loud noise that sounded as though I was in a small plane and took it to the dealer and they replaced it. About 5k miles later the front passenger wheel bearing started making the same noise so I took it to the dealer and had it replaced. Also the front passenger ended up needing to be replaced soon after that because the alignment never felt right and when they tested the tires that one was bad. It may have been moved from a different location since I rotate my tires regularly.

I am currently at 51k miles and that noise came back. I took it to the dealer and they said it was the bearing on the front passenger side and thankfully it is still covered under warranty.
