Vehicle had charging system light go on (battery light). Battery was not charging and there was a noise near the alternator. Next day, light goes off, battery is charging now, no noise. Two days and 40 miles later, no other lights and no other noise. Vehicle enters highway, makes it about 3 miles when the cruise control shuts off. All lights on the dash come on and shut off. Driver pulls over, starts to see smoke coming out from under the hood. Keeps hood shut and waits for emergency services to arrive on scene. Engine goes up in flames, all seats are burned up, windows blown out, front tires melt. Total loss.

The TPMS causes slow air leaks to develop due to faulty gaskets/O rings. Tires with this problem require refilling with approximately 5 lbs of air pressure per week.

The fault description recently reported in NHTSA campaign number 13T006000 for Michelin tire failure for a series of tires is exactly that I reported in complaint ODI number 10470716 last year. I included photographs of the 235/60R17 tires, two of which had failed, and the other two were showing degradation damage. The 235/60R17 tires should be included in the recall. Thanks,

The van has Michelin 235/60R17 tires purchased new in 7/4/2009. One tire failed 3/5/12 with sidewall rupture at 30,500 miles; I have a photo of the damaged Michelin tire area. Tire had rapid air leak - essentially a blowout; was going 20 mph. Second tire failed on 8/10/12 with leak at 35,700 miles. Tire had sidewall leak deflating tire in 10-12 minutes; was going 15 mph. Second tire id is 235/60R17 102T 1391H3mnx 5008. Have photo of tire leak area. Second failed tire and two remaining Michelin tires on van appear to have dry rot on sidewalls. Remaining tires have same id and 5008 and 0209 at end. In both cases, tire was not hit and shows no damage other than sidewall rubber degrading. Tread depth is good. Have photos showing dry rot degradation. I have no confidence in two remaining Michelin tires and am replacing remaining tires on van with the second Michelin failed tire.
