Elantra GLS 1.8L Pzev

I am not sure what started this issue, but my air conditioning will intermittently work. When it doesn’t it blows hot and damp/smelly air. If I put my back windows down slightly it seems to kick start it for a little bit but not too long before blowing dank air. Was told replacing compressor may fix it but they were not sure.
