We bought this car in February of 2017 at a dealer in Quebec with only 37000 km on it thinking we hit the jackpot. First problem we encountered was when one of the two key fobs decided to work when it felt like it. I changed the batteries a couple of times but it didn't seem to help. I asked the Hyundai 'stealer' to order me a new fob but I was told they were on back order. Gee, I wonder why? Because all their fobs are all crap.

So, the one Fob stopped working completely and then the second one started acting up. It had an engine start feature on it but it never did work right from day one on either Fob. Once in a while it would start the car if the sun was shinning and the wind was blowing softly but not very often, so we never bothered using that function.

Then the key hole in the driver's door stopped working in November of 2018. Since there is only one on the whole car, my wife couldn't get into the car one day while out shopping because at this point her Fob stopped working also. A good samaritan walking by was able to open the door for her so she could get home. I was able to take the lock cylinder apart and had to take a couple of tumblers out due to severe corrosion. At least this way she could still get into her car with her garbage Key Fob.

Another day while out shopping, my wife came out of the store and tried to start her car but it wouldn't start. We had to have it towed to the garage and they spent 2 days trying to figure out what was wrong with it. They finally got it started but could not determine why it decided to start. They concluded that is was a Fob issue and suggested we get new ones. Pretty hard to buy new ones when the dealer can't even get them.

I tried an aftermarket Fob but there are none available on the market that will work on the Elantra. I bought one on Amazon made by Dorman but had to send it back because it wouldn't hold the memory for the code. Contacted the tech at Dorman and he said it was an issue with the Hyundai computer that wouldn't allow it to hold the memory. Nice! Thanks Hyundai!
