I got the P0496 code first. I replaced the evac purge solenoid (on top of the motor). The check engine came back on but as P0497. My mechanic said that some new parts weren’t working as expected so I returned that part and purchased a more expensive evap purge sole. Code p0497 returned. I replaced gas cap and the canister purge valve solenoid. Then the charcoal canister failed, not fixed. I replaced the tubing on both sides of the evap purge valve. I have a smoke machine but really don’t think it will help. Next part replacement will be the relief valve off the charcoal canister. It’s a short tube that hangs off the canister and has a metal cap on the end.

I filled up today and normally get 26 mpg or so, it only climbed to 25.2 (ball park). A longer highway trip will reveal actual mpg. It doesn’t seem to affect mpg too drastically. The car will get 30mpg with a tail wind. B’ham to Charlotte for instance. Return trip only gets 27.5 mpg.

I will continue to research P0497 and post results. I read about the o2 sensors but not plugs or coils, etc. I did plugs at around 100,000. I basically use this car for any trip of 20 miles RT or more.
