Sonata 2.4L 4 cyl

  • Manual transmission
  • 80,545 miles

This is a continuation of a previous gripe regarding the same problem but an additional fix that needs to be checked. If the timing belt is changed, the balance shaft belt should be changed as well. The oil pump shaft needs to be checked for it's alignment. On this car the balance shaft was one tooth off. This can be remedied if the mechanic double checks the alignment after tension is reapplied on the belts.

The biggest source of the vibration was the oil pump shaft alignment. It was 90 degrees out! Some unknown mechanic really goofed big time! This would be low volume, in-his-face, rip him to shreds! Then, up the line and repeat to each supervisor. Until one gets high enough to threaten with small claims court and suggest their intangible asset, Good Will, is severely damaged. As a going concern, they may not survive in an economic downturn!

Sonata 2.4L 4 cyl

The problem is known by Hyundai, however, depending on the level of reliability of your local mechanic, they may brush you off. This car was seen by three different mechanics. One said it was normal for this type of car. The second just fixed what the previous mechanic failed to repair on a related problem. The third mechanic took the time to research the service bulletins to fix the problem. This alone may not fix the vibration completely. A mechanic will have to also look at the oil pump shaft alignment. Also, if the timing belt was changed, the balance shaft belt should have been changed at the same time. If the mechanic knows their stuff, then they will double check the balance shaft alignment after putting tension on the belts. It can change the alignment by one tooth. Next the four bushings on the sub frame need to be checked. If they are deteriorated or missing they need to be replaced. One isolates the sub frame from the chassis. Metal to metal contact transferred vibration into the cabin. On this vehicle, all but one were gone. The fourth was just a piece allowing an axle to make contact.

This is a continuing rant. I may have already posted this. Regardless, it's the labor that runs the price up. Some folks are willing to endure some vibration, because of the total price versus the return in vibration reduction.

Sonata 2.4 L 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 32,400 miles

I bought this car just about a week ago and it was running great off the lot. I was going through a drive through and noticed this issue with the vibrating when stopped. It was a lot worse when I had the AC on max. Not really that big of an issue but it was enough to annoy the crap out of me.

The vibration in this car is so annoying. I have had my car to the service dept. 3 times.

Everytime I get told that's normal for a 4 cylinder. It does it bad when the enigine gets warm,

and I put on the defroster or the ac. My riders can also feel it. The steering wheel feels like

a vibrating massager in your hand.

I took my car in for the vibrating problem again. It was getting worst. The same reasons ,

idoling and when the ac or defroster was on it was vibrating bad. I was told again that was normal for a 4 cylinder. If they couldn't feel it they couldn't fix it.

This was the first time I took the car in for a maintenance check-up and told them the car was

vibrating when I put it in gear. Worse when I turned on the ac. I was told that was normal for

4cylinder cars to do that.
