problem #2

Oct 202017

Sonata 2.4L, Gdi

  • Automatic transmission
  • 49,714 miles

Car has been exhibiting excessive oil consumption. At the time this was first noticed (Fall 2017), I was adding about 1.5 quarts of oil between oil changes (~every 7000-7500 miles). The Hyundai dealer told me that if the oil consumption wasn't at least 1 quart per 1000 miles, that they wouldn't deal with it and it wasn't considered a problem. They offered to change the oil, have me drive it for at least 1000 miles and then bring it back to measure the consumption. I told them that at the time (with less than 50,000 miles on the vehicle) it was definitely consuming less than a quart every 1000 miles but that I didn't understand why it was consuming any oil at all unless there was a leak or it was burning oil. Again the dealership said it was considered normal or not a serious issue and they wouldn't do anything about it unless the consumption equaled or exceeded 1 quart per 1000 miles.

Over time, the oil consumption has slowly been increasing to where now (since May 2022) I've been adding just about 1 quart every 1000 miles (or about 4-5 quarts every 5000 miles) to keep the engine oil level above the minimum level. Since I retired in Jan 2021, I'm only driving about 5000 miles or less per year with little highway mileage and that's when I've been noticing the most oil consumption. There also is NO indication of any oil leaks anywhere around the engine or under the car after its been sitting parked or in the garage. Despite the very excessive oil consumption, the car still runs fine (so far) and I haven't noticed any black smoke coming from the exhaust pipe except perhaps for a minute or so after the car has just started running after a cold start. Several other Hyundai 2012-2017 owners I've talked to have also said that they have also experienced unusually excessive oil consumption.

I’m having problems with my engine consumption, it's been very dry. I even got my oil changed once before and the mechanic was like, this thing is bone dry. My oil light is not working and not letting me know anything.
