problem #1

Feb 112018

Tucson SE 2.7L V6

  • Automatic transmission

In Dec 2017 when Gear shifter got stuck first time. I put it in Neutral and it ran without problem till Feb 2018. Now in Feb 2018 when it got stuck in R gear would not catch Neutral or P or D. After few days it was able to move in reverse and N, but no P or D. Brake lights do work so it is not the problem. Also Neutral -Safety switch and Cable from inside car which changes gear works. It seems it is seized Gear shifter shaft or lever. Now towed to Dealer in OH. Already have a case # from Hyundai. After reading Hyundai forums have learnt that this is somewhat common issue in some models. No release button for stuck shifter to put in Neutral.

Update from Mar 20, 2018: Dealer Service shop called and said that it needs new transmission approx $3000. I am surprised it happened all of a sudden like overnight. At least, lucky the car was in parking lot. I asked him if lubrication could free up the seized shaft of gear changer and he said the cable is ok. Didn't understand exactly what he meant.
