My 10 year old son broke his arm on the play ground at school, while taking him to the hospital to get his arm attended to the jeep breaks down , had to borrow a car to finish the trip to the hospital , had to tow car back home ,after all that we investigated the problem with jeep and found that the nut that holds the splined collet on the output shaft of the transmission had come all the way off the shaft letting the collet between the transmission and transfer case shaft to work it's way down the output shaft stripping all the splines of collet and output shaft leaving us without a car for two weeks , this not a normal wear and tear for a transmission to have in my opinion just a bad design , we bought a jeep for its dependable factors and it let us down in a time of need

So I stopped at a friends and went to leave 45 minutes later, and my dash said I was in park and I had my floor console shifter in drive and it acted like it was in park and couldn't roll as if in neutral. So I shut it off but key wouldn't go to off because floor shifter wouldn't go back to park - even reverse was resisting too much. But if it's in neutral I could shut engine off. Finally I took console off exposing inside of shifter and got shifter back to park so I could remove key. Also took pcm board out of floor shifter and turned over and cleaned entire carbon slide tracks with ear swabs sticks and electronic cleaner. I put it back together.
Looked under sheath and found shift cable that has a block on it that mounts into a bracket that mounts on side of transmission. I got gears to line up with shifter by moving back and forth by hand at transmission shift arm as someone moved floor shifter to each position. Then loosening a adjustable arm in floor shifter ( one nut you loosen ) I got cable perfect and it shifts smoother and at lower rpms. Now all the gears can be used up and down with the manual left or right slide with shifter when in drive. Goes through all smooth up and downshifting. If it stays as it is I will be happy and I did this and the ignition switch assembly. Did all my self cost me 35 for electric module that bolts onto ignition body and replaced the tumbler assembly and recoded to my existing key. Tumbler assembly kit cost 79 both at Penn Yan, NY Carquest. I hope this helps you fellow Jeep Commander owners.
