I was having increasing shudder and wobble over the past few months at higher speeds (50kph) and yesterday I was turning right and I heard a clunk and the steering wheel stopped turning. I could still turn it further but each movement was jarring, smooth for a bit and then it would jerk to a halt again. The wheel itself spins more than it did before and is certainly not as responsive as it was before I heard the sound.
