Had Jeep towed on April 6 to my dealership (closed for weekend) April 8 it was reported to me that I had 30 codes, 3 system updates, 1 recall (O2 sensor) and my battery connectors were lose. They said I could come pick it up! Main diagnose was loose cables. After being charged for them to tighten my battery cables ($100), I started my Jeep and the engine lights and others popped up! So grateful that I was still in the parking lot. I pulled it back into the repair shop. Days later I was told it was the TIPM (totally integrated power module). Of course this repair wasn't covered under my warranty (I have 2). I researched the TIPM. It appears that I am not the only one who has this issue. There are tons of us! A class action lawsuit for 2011-2013, acknowledged the faulty TIPM but not the 2014! It's the Generation! I would appreciate if Jeep would admit their error of equipping the gen 4 with defective TIPM and reimburse me!

engine stalls/shuts off while driving engine stalls/shuts off while driving

First stalling in 8/2018 Vehicle check engine light illuminates with a chime. Within seconds vehicle completely shuts-off, with no power, no radio, no dash lights. However, power will be restored sometimes within seconds of shutting down. Vehicle will restart and can be driven. Stalling issue was first noticed at about 100k miles on vehicle and continued to happen every 7K miles randomly without warning. stalling happens random times and random speeds cant predict it.

Dealer cannot find root cause. cannot duplicate issue.

Fast forward to 1/2019 issue has gotten worse. vehicle stalls every 300-800 miles as supposed to every 7k miles like before. dealer still unable to find fault. CEL comes on but no codes. Freezeframe data shows normal activity.

Opened case with NHTSA and Chrysler. No help!

any fixes?

I read a complaint on here, that he was able to fix the problem by replacing the wiring harness that runs along side the transmission. Not sure if that is the case with my car but once I get my car back from shop I will try it or I will ask them to try it. I will update soon.

Update from Apr 24, 2019: Update 4/23/19 Found stalling issue. Corrosion found on Wiring harness on right side (passenger) due to water leak from sunroof. Water leaked down the A-pillar, down the right wall where wires are located and corroded the wires causing the pin heads to shrink and lose connection causing the CEL light to illuminate and vehicle shutting off. Prior to fixing/replacing the harness, numerous testing was done to verify that the wiring harness was the cause. Upon wiggling the harness the dash lights would go off and within a few attempts the CEL would come on and car stalled.

The fix: found used harness from another vehicle from wrecking yard, took out good pin heads and replaced it with my bad ones by soldering them onto the wires. Tested vigorously while driving and in shop and problem has not returned.

Conclusion: water leak caused corrosion to wires. Wire pin heads replaced. Problem fixed. Sunroof checked for leaks and no leaks have been found.

Grand Cherokee Limited 3.0L Ecodiesel

  • Automatic transmission
  • 33,600 miles

Our 2014 Jeep with the EcoDiesel has stalled three times now. Once when driving 75 mph on a freeway in the rain, once when driving 65 mph on the freeway in dry conditions, and once in an intersection while pulling away from a stop sign in dry conditions. The only common parameter seems to be that there was approximately 1/4 tank of fuel each time.

I had the vehicle in to two separate dealers the first two times. They said they did a "software update" that should take care of the issue. I know have the vehicle in the dealer again after the third time and they have had it for 5 days so far and can't replicate the problem.

This is extremely frustrating and right now I cannot let me wife drive the vehicle, especially with my two year old son in the back seat. It is EXTREMELY UNSAFE! If she were to stall in the middle of a busy intersection or again on the freeway it could be catastrophic!

Update from Aug 9, 2018: Vehicle has stalled two additional times now (5 total). The last two times there was almost 1/2 tank of fuel, and was travelling at approximately 70 MPH.

Grand Cherokee Summit Diesel

I got some DEF in the diesel tank in August 2015 at about 33000 miles. The jeep was in the shop for 6 weeks and I was told it was fixed. This was not jeeps fault but what follows is.

I got the jeep from the shop and drove from Houston to Dallas twice. On the second trip the DEF light came on and said I could only go 150 miles or the cat would not start. I made it to Dallas the the dealer told me that the was normal for the DEF system to go out around 30000 miles. Two weeks later I had to go back to Dallas and pick the jeep up. I was told it was fixed.

On my drive back to Houston I noticed the fuel gauge was not working. I took it back to the dealer. I had to rent a car because they did not have any loaner vehicles which cost me 300.00. I picked up the jeep 5 days later.

I had to go back to Dallas to start a training class. I got to Dallas in the pouring rain. the car died out on the freeway at rush hour with 364000. It wax towed to the dealer. I was told that it was due to a plastic piece that had cracked and that wax normal wear so it wasn't covered under warranty and I had to pay 134.00 to get the car out. So a 58000.00 vehicle his held together by a plastic piece unbelievable

I paid the 134.00 and drove off. I got 75 miles south of Dallas when the electronic light came on again and the car stopped in the freeway. I had it towed to the dealer there. 3 days later I got a call from the dealer telling me the cat was fixed. He said it was a fuel pump issue and it would be 100.00 dedeuctables from my extended warranty. I told him the fuel pump was just replaced it should be covered under warranty. He told me that this was a different part number and was not covered under warranty because the jeep had 37000 miles

I picked up the jeep on my way back to Dallas. I got to Dallas and the service engine light came on. I took it back to the dealer the said it was the fuel line. A week later I got the jeep out of the dealer with the assurance it was fixed. I left Dallas to drive to Houston. 35 miles north of Houston the service electronic light came on and the car would not go more than 35 miles an hour on the freeway.

I took it back to the dealer. 3 weeks later they called said it was ready. Apperantly they claim it was a fuel pump issue. Chrysler did cover that under warranty but refused to reimburse me for rental cars and dedeuctables I have had to pay.

Chrysler assured me that the jeep was fixed. 3000 later the same thing broke down on the freeway. Jeep towed to the dealership. Fuel line problem same as before but not covered under warranty although it has been replaced twice.

Jeep Grand Cherokee is a piece of garbage not only that don't expect any help from Chrysler. The sell you a piece of sh*t and finance it do the got you by the balls

We bought our Jeep Grand Cherokee 2014 and started to knotice some issues like the digital shifter would shift but not change gears the radio would start increasing volume without being touched. Then one day my wife was driving down the road and the Jeep shut off. We where lucky that she was in a area where she could slow without getting hit. The jeep started to reboot a little time after. We have taken it in to Crystal Chrysler in Cathedral City, Ca. The first time they said they could not figure out what happened. They sent us on our way without a concern for our safety. The next week the check engine light starts flashing while we are driving. We took it back into Crystal Chrysler for them to look further into the car shutting off and to fix the cause of the engine light. They said it was cyclinder 6 and they had to replace it . This repair took them a week and they DO NOT PROVIDE a rental car while recalls or repairs under warrenty are being made. I open a claim with there corporation who finally rented us a car. When picking up the vehicle they said that they fixed the cylinder with a improved part but did not have any news on the car stalling. We checked the paperwork before taking the car and realized that there was no mention of the car stalling. When we asked to have the concern added to the paperwork they said they could not. We informed them that we will not sign out the car untill they would document the car shutting off. Never the less they still have our car and we are stuck with no solutions. I have not received any help from this dealer or the corporation. There are no value in there vehicles or customer service. You are making a mistake by buying one of these vehicles. While on the freeway on ramp my Jeep lost all power, and I was able to pull off to the side of the road, fortunately without being hit from the behind with the other cars accelerating to enter the freeway. Unable to restart the Jeep, had to be towed, and release the gear shifter located in the center storage under a cover. Tow truck driver had no clue how to unlock the gears, nor did the dealership. The tow truck driver called the dealership, I told them.

Jeep informed me that the fuel pump went bad and that the part was on bad order and they did not know when it would be released. They were able to find the part on the east coast and had it shipped in, this did not correct the problem. The Jeep was only producing half of the power needed to crank over the engine. Then told they thought that the crank was bad and needed to start to take apart the motor to see what was wrong, but had to wait until Jeep Star Technical support would approve the work. In and effort to make sure it was actually the fuel pump causing the issues they replaced the fuel pump again, hoping it was just a faulty part. No Luck!! Still not corrected at this time they sent a Star Technician to evaluate the Jeep. Still not fixed, now with a Eco Diesel Star Mechanic being arrange to evaluate the issues.

Hoping that they will resolve the issue, but at this time I am not convinced at this time. We are now 3 weeks into this with no solution and I have been told that they have $13000 invested in my Jeep. When is enough, enough?????

engine stalls/shuts off while driving

Stalling issue occurred twice in 10 days so far. Have had my Jeep Grand Cherokee Ecodiesel for a little over a year with 33K mileage on it already as I have a long work commute. Love the car and have had no issues thus far with it. Suddenly on a trip back from NJ two weeks ago, the car stalled at around 40-45 MPH in the left lane of the service road of 87. Restarted after about 20 minutes and was able to drive it to a local Jeep dealer. They kept it for a long weekend and could not determine the root cause and stated it was ok to drive that it was probably a blip.

10 days later and driving at about 60 MPH it stalled again. Extremely scary as could not immediately find a place to pull over and the guy behind me almost hit me. Yet again the car restarted after about 10-15 min but no way was I driving it ! Had it towed to my normal Jeep dealer and they kept it for a week and today told me they could not find anything wrong with it and that I needed to pick it up as they needed the space in their lot. I asked what were my options as I know it will happen again and frankly I fear for my safety I won't drive it until fixed. They stated that they cannot drive it around forever trying to make it re-occur. The engine light was on and they were able to note the failure but not the cause. The picture attached is of the dashboard the second time it stalled once I was able to pull over. The car was off.

Update from Jun 22, 2016: Update on my issue: I have owned several car models in my 30+ years of driving. In all those years I have never experienced the horrific customer service as I received from Chrysler Jeep. My issue was one of safety and in response to their inability to detect the issue, they offered me two free oil changes for my "inconvenience" and please come get your car off our lot as we need the space. Chrysler was totally ineffective and could not supersede the dealer. They actually threatened me with storage costs ! I am no longer driving a Jeep and I never will again. This issue could have caused me a significant injury or death if I was unable to pull over safely and they just did not care. I am still receiving recall notices on this SUV for various items and cannot believe how many of them there has been since purchasing this car.

Driving on the fast lane on 101 N freeway, panel showed a red light and low oil pressure message. I took car to dealer and they asked me to bring it back the next day as they were busy and my new car needed an oil change. I made the appointment for the next morning, but I almost killed myself on the freeway. Cars were driving fast by me when my new Jeep (7 month old) engine went off (stall) and the steering wheel and gas/brake pedals were unresponsive. I was able to glide over the shoulder of the freeway and stop safely with the emergency brake. I will not forget how nerve racking this incident was. I almost hit several cars on the way to the freeway shoulder.

I took the car on a tow truck back to dealership and made my "oil change" appointment. 5 weeks later- I'm still driving a rental van and want to cancel this lease. A refurbished car will not drive the same and I won't be feel safe again- this is my 3rd Jeep Grand Cherokee on a roll. I loved these cars, but issues like these had turned me away from them. BTW, I filled the DEF fluid twice in just 10K miles ... Manual calls for 10K... Ive done it at 5K and 9K

Grand Cherokee Limited V6 3.6L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 24,000 miles

When we purchased this $41k vehicle, we did so because we thought the Jeep Grand Cherokee was a safe and reliable vehicle. You know the old saying, you get what you pay for. Well, we've had issue after issue with our new Jeep.

As soon as we got it, I noticed the turn signal was oddly more difficult to position for a right turn than a left turn and it made a weird clicking sound when pushed in position. Shortly thereafter, with less than 4k miles, we had it in for service because there was a humming / buzzing sound coming from the engine area. As suspected, there was a part rubbing against the fire-wall, causing the vibration sound to emit through the cabin of the Jeep. They tied it off.

Still nothing too bad...and then the check engine lights started to appear. When it would rain, the check engine light would come on. We would take it in, and they would either update the software or simply brush it off. One night, the lights wouldn't turn off. I had to remove the battery cables to turn them off. The check engine light came on the next day. Same song and dance. Then one day, the horn just started blaring while we were driving down the road. Then the check-engine light came on. Took it in, same thing; software or brush-off. Then everything came to a head with 24k miles on it and 1.5 years later. We were driving down the road and the engine started to sputter. The engine didn't stop running but pushing the gas pedal didn't accelerate the vehicle. The vehicle finally came to a stop while I was in one of two lanes with no turn-off. Me and my family were in harms way with cars speeding around us at 60 mph plus. We finally called the police to help us block traffic and had it towed to the dealership.

Well, after 1.5 weeks in for service, they still don't know what's wrong with it. I will keep everyone posted with updates as I learn them.

Update from Mar 23, 2015: The vehicle was returned to us with the explanation that the fuel pump had failed. They had replace both fuel pumps. I had my doubts that this was the root of the problem but we reluctantly took the vehicle back. A couple of days later, while my wife was leaving for a long trip, the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT came back on. We had enough. We want out of this death trap piece of junk. The dealership has had the vehicle now for 3 weeks for just this latest issue. They told us the fuel pump failed again. They are arguing with Chrysler on how to fix it and finally agreed to that they had to replace the Power Train Control Module (brains of the vehicle). As anyone with the brain could imagine, this caused the fuel pumps to die, horns to blare, lights to not shut off, etc. etc. Who knows what other parts it screwed up along the way that we won't know until later.

To add insult to injury, the GM of the dealership reassured us that they were willing to get us into a new vehicle and take whatever losses would occur on the deal and recoup them from the OEM to make us happy customers. Once we sat down to negotiate, they crawfished on the deal and weren't willing to take any loss. Actually, they were trying to screw us on another deal to make money on us. A $500 customer loyalty rebate off full MSRP. Give me a break. We have decided to file for Texas Lemon Law Relief and to not give this local dealership any further business ever. We know most Jeeps are excellent vehicles and we simply got unlucky to get one of the bad ones off the lot. What is unacceptable to us is how badly we have been treated by the dealership and Chrysler when the fault rests solely on their faulty product.

Update from Nov 18, 2015: It's been awhile since I reported this problem on this website so I figured I owed you guys a follow-up. We got the car back a couple of times with the check engine light still coming on. It didn't matter, we were filing for Texas Lemon Law Relief. After several failures to get the check engine light to stop coming on, they finally figured out what was wrong with it. However, it was too late and the problem totalled the vehicle. The problem was and originated due to a small leak in a seal around the sun roof. We told them again and again and again each time we brought the car in that the issues tended to occur when and after it rained. All they had to do was do a water tight test (something they can do in their shop) and the issue would have been identified. Instead, the perfectly good vehicle was ruined with water contamination which fried the computer modules. Keep in mind, they had us driving this vehicle around the entire time. We've all now heard of the issues with their computer systems being hacked. Ours were simply being short circuited. We are lucky we weren't killed in that vehicle and to take some credit, we were persistent and our concern was completely warranted.
We filed and won our Texas Lemon Law Relief and received a buy back for 100% what we had in the vehicle.
We were satisfied with this result. It's a shame the dealership didn't just work with us to begin with. We would have accepted less and had a new Jeep; however, they were greedy and didn't care about making us happy customers. Certainly won't be purchasing a anything from that dealership ever again. We are interested in purchasing a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. We are moving soon and will purchase it in our new town.

Ever since I got my new 2014 Grand Cherokee there has been nothing but issues. After numerous attempts to resolve I am only told that there are software updates and that they have reinstalled the software. That should help resolve the issue, which it never does and only causes other issues. My main complaint, other than buying a new car where the engine just shuts down on the highway and does not brake when you are hitting the break causing an accident, is the engine not engaging the gears properly causing a major issue with the smoothness of the drive and a real pain and nobody who knows how to resolve anything because while there are some really amazing mechanics out there, they are not computer and electrical engineers that are capable of fixing these items despite what the manufacturers say and now all of our cars will never get fixed. Thanks for taking my 30K and making me feel stupid Jeep. You win and now I hate Jeep.

Grand Cherokee Summit 3.6L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 1,937 miles

I was moving rather down the ramp of a covered parking lot; approximately 5-7 MPH. The car abruptly shut off. Oddly - and perhaps a safety mechanism - the car self-shifted into neutral. While still rolling and in neutral, I attempted to restart the engine. The engine turned over and seemed to start, but then shut down again after approx. 3-sec. I then noticed the Check Engine light On.

While the gas gauge showed half-full, the symptoms and sensation of the above problem/shutdown the same as if the car had run out of gas. My first thought was that the gauge was faulty. Thankfully, a gas station was immediately outside the garage and I was able to roll into the general area of the station without power. Once stopped, I was able to restart the car, pull into a pump, and top off the tank with only 5 or 6 gallons; the gauge then reporting Full but the Check Engine light remained on.

At that point, while still at the pump, I called the dealer, reported the above, and was told to bring the car in. The dealer was about 50-miles from my then current location. I can say that I was very apprehensive the entire drive to the dealer fearing the car would shut off at the most inopportune moment. But, I made it fine and without issue. The next day the car was ready for pickup. The service tech told me that they had updated the software in the car, but did not tell me, specifically, what the issue was. The car has driven fine since (about 140 miles so far).

I'm still a bit wary. If the car were to shut off at speed, say on the freeway in traffic, and remain in drive, this would be a serious safety concern.

Update from Aug 27, 2015: Since my original issue, just a month after I leased the brand new car, I have had dozens of incidents of the same issue. My 2014 Grand Cherokee Summit has had repeated incidents of the same issue(s). It shuts off while driving. Mostly, this has been at lower speeds where I am only a nuisance to relatively slow traffic behind me. Most recently, it has begun happening at higher speeds on the freeway, where I must coast across lanes of traffic with my hazards on, hoping none of the 80-mph cars I'm dodging has a cell-texting teenager driving. In most instances, I have to come to a complete stop in order put the car in Park and restart. In many instances, lights around the dash are blinking madly while this is going on.

A year and a couple months later, I am no closer to getting it fixed. I have taken the car into the dealer at least a half-dozen times. Apparently, if the super sophisticated computers cannot tell the highly-skilled service people that there is a problem, then the problem must not exist. They cannot possibly apply any sort of diagnostic skill that might detect a problem outside of their sensors!

The dealer's solution? Have a service tech drive the car for a day! I appreciate the effort. But what value is that? So the tech can say, "Yeah, happened to me, too." If it doesn't register a computer readout when it happens to me or my family, it is going to somehow newly register a readout just because the tech is driving it? And, even if it does occur while the tech is driving, then what? How is that any different than me bringing it in and describing what happened.

To make matters worse, the service people have said they've done a search and they cannot find any other instances like mine. Really? How do you think I ended up here? There are thousands of similar occurrences.

Update from Jan 5, 2016: Problem solved!!! My original dealer was worthless. After a half-dozen visits, including a couple tows, I had become a nuisance to them. I'm certain that they simply went through the motions, checked the stupid onboard computer, parked the car, then called and had me pick it up.

Then, one morning I was driving to the office and the car shut off in the middle of a busy highway. I was stuck like a boulder in the middle of a rushing river. Once again, I had to put the car in park, depress the brake, and re-start the car. As fate would have it, I was less than a half-mile from a different dealer. And, the engine light was ON (apparently, the only credible evidence of a problem). I pulled into the service bay, left the car running, took out my phone and video taped the entire process of the service tech coming out, seeing the engine light, hooking up the computer, and admitting that there were six different issues indicated. I left the car with them and told them they could have it as long as is necessary to fix the problem.

Key point: I also lodged a formal complaint at the NHTSA, with my VIN. I believe that this extra step lead to extra attention. From that point, I received several phone calls from Chrysler (who - really - were helpful and pleasant). The dealer had the car for about two weeks.

Solution: Excellent technicians at the new dealer discovered some sort of short in the main wiring harness (the main vein of cables and wires in a single tube, running along the drivetrain underneath the cab). He had taken all of the comfort features (carpet, shroud, etc.) out of the cab and drove the car around while manually fiddling and jiggling stuff, including the harness. He found that he could consistently cause the engine to shut off, abruptly, by jiggling that main harness. They ordered a new harness assembly, replaced the old one. The car has run like a top ever since.

Bottom line, the original dealer was not the least bit interested in diagnostic curiosity. I had ostensibly become a liability; an expense because my problem required real diagnostic talent and actual service. They had no interest in this. They would ostensibly rather have me drive my family around in a death trap than actually work outside their dumb-ass onboard computer protocol.

But, kudos to dealer-two, my new go-to place to shop. And kudos to Chrysler, for stepping up and actually helping me find a solution.

Update from Mar 7, 2016: I have received a couple emails from fellow travelers asking for assistance. For some reason, even though I'm logged in (obviously), it's not clear how one goes about responding to emails. My Account just brings me to another login screen that loops me back to the same login screen (!). The emails are not visible here on the same page as my complaint.

To whomever sent the following: "Hi there. I'm so glad I read your post regarding your 2014 Jeep GC issues. I'm having the same issues on my wife's Summit. Any suggestions on who or what dept to call at Chrysler to get some real attention to this? The dealer I took it to twice was useless and it just happened yesterday and was taken to a new dealership far from my home so I'd really like to take this to corporate. Any suggestions would be appreciated."

Answer: I first called Chrysler Customer Care (excellent, responsive service) at, 800 763-8422. This initialized a process where the company monitored progress and followed up. I also used this site, carcomplaints, to create a complaint at NHTSA. NHTSA did respond to my email acknowledging the complaint, and that's about it. However, I'm lead to believe that my engaging them did result in extra attention at the successful dealer. To be fair, it was after my filing of the complaint that I brought the car to the second [eventually successful] dealer. So, perhaps it's unfair to that dealer that they only acted when whipped by NHTSA. Perhaps they were just much better than the original dealer.

Personally, I don't think you need to file a complaint. I would go back to your dealer (or a different dealer) and share with them the solution that worked for me: an electrical short or otherwise problem with the main wiring harness beneath the interior shifter area running alongside the transmission. The service people diagnosed this by removing all the coverings and jiggling the harness while they ran the engine or drove slowly, which allowed them to replicate the problem on-demand. They then replaced the entire harness mass and I've been fine ever since. Because, ostensibly, this exact problem does not register on the onboard computer, if you don't describe it for them they will likely not come this conclusion on their own.

I'm actually very happy with the vehicle now that the problem has been fixed.
