Most of the time when I turn on the defrost with the heat and blower setting to any position the AC light comes on.

Not sure if this is the normal way the defroster works but I don't think so because it doesn't function this way constantly. It seems like it might be unimportant but I wonder if it relates in any way to the defrosting problem I have on the drivers side front window.
