MAZDA3 S 2.3L

  • Manual transmission
  • 187,000 miles

Noticed there was an unusual engine noise while accelerating between 3000-4000 RPMs. It could be described as a clattering, knocking or diesel like. The noise would only happen while under load such as accelerating and later at cruising speed. It started to use oil much quicker and a close eye had to be kept as to not get too low.

Local engine shop replaced the Variable Timing Actuator and related components. He said the pulley was shot and it was a miracle that the pin did not fly loose into the engine. Much more driving in that condition and it would have completely destroyed the engine. In addition, I had them replace the water pump while they were at it and I also needed a new coolant tank (it had a small crack). A motor mount was also shot and required replacement.

Total cost for diagnosis, all parts and labor - $1,550
