Accident on 10/15/2020, unoccupied vehicle rolled from a parked position down a hill and struck a house. The vehicle is designed to have the transmission automatically shift to park when the driver's door is open, and this system was functional at the time of the incident. Disengagement of the parking pawl was the cause of the event.

The contact owns a 2019 Mercedes-Benz A220. While driving approximately 20 mph and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to respond and the gear display indicated that the transmission was in the neutral position. After restarting the engine, the vehicle was driven to flagship motor cars of lynnfield (North 385 broadway rte 1, lynnfield, MA) to be diagnosed, but the cause of the failure could not be duplicated. After retrieving the vehicle, the failure continued. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 1,344.
