S55 AMG 5.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 65,000 miles

These are stock AMG, S55, two section 19 inch wheels, made in Germany, appear to be not serviceable because they crack on the back side lip and into the rim area allowing air to leak out and resulting in flat tire and dash light warning. This statement is based upon 5 cracks on four different stock AMG, S55, wheels.

Been told on first wheel flat "that I must have hit a big pot hole" to do that extensive damage to rim; but have never hit any hole or anything on or off the road. Same problem has now happened on all four rims, with one rim happening twice in two different locations. Being that dash wheel pressure light is now always on, one constantly must monitor for flat tire from wheel cracks. With the stock low profile tires it is difficult to "feel" when tire is low or going flat from rim crack. Issue has become more than a pain, pocket book drain, and safety problem, because of down time, tire replacement, and doubt in remaining MB workmanship related to AMG. I have a mid 1960 MB with three times mileage that is more safe and dependable.

There appears to be a lot of smoke and mirrors related to these Made in Germany, 2 section wheels with the blame always associated to owner operation by running over something creating a rim crack. This is just not true and minimizes mfg. responsibility.

Has anyone had the Italian made, AMG, S55, two section, 19 inch wheels FAIL? My limited research has not found wheel failure in the Italian made wheels which seems to point to the German made wheel mfg problem.
