There exists a forum for this problem but it is on the Ford Escape (which is basically the Mercury Mariner). The YouTube video on repairing it yourself mentions that the problem is caused by the defective seal on the rear glass which allows water to leak down into the hatch assembly and corrode it. I feel both parts should be repaired through a recall.
