Pathfinder ES

  • Automatic transmission
  • 99,000 miles

Well my pathfinder was working great and I never had any problem with it then one day I'm driving it to work and it just stop I kept accelerating and it wouldn't move. A friend of mine came and looked at it and told me on the spot you radiator busted and filled your transmission with coolant and that destroyed your transmission and destroy it did. My friend to told me funny thing is that could have been prevented by installing an external cooling which he would have done for 100 bucks if only had Nissan let me know that the 2005 pathfinders had this issue. Oh well i feel cheated and I swore in my life I will have a nissan car again or Acura for that matter nor anyone in my family. This one I'm stuck with but once guaranteed that the mechanic gave it's about to expire I'm selling it and I'm definitely not buying Nissan Again! Ever!

Ridiculous!!! Bought a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder with $53,000 miles on it and have paid out in repairs already over $2000 since I bought it in 2010. First check engine light was on due to the fuel sensor, fixed that for $900.00 then there was no heat coming out of the car had coolant and lines cleared out and then no heat after a month again to find out the radiator is shot and now this problem that Nissan knows that have faulty radiators in cars and do nothing about it but want you to dish out more money when the radiator fails and wrecks your transmission. They ought to do something about it. This is the second Nissan I have purchased and will be the last one!!! Never AGAIN!!!!!

Pathfinder SE 4.0L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 93,000 miles

In october 2012, I noticed vibration from the transmission when I was accelerating at high speeds. I brought it into Walser Nissan - they could not duplicate the problem but recommended the fluid be replaced which may help. I said ok, since it needed it anyways and $250 later I was driving it again. Two months later, I noticed it was doing it again only more often. I then researched it on the internet and found this website and other documented issues with the 05 Pathfinder transmission. I immediately took it to Walser Nissan and they again could not duplicate the vibration but found transmission oil in the radiator however did not see any in the transmission fluid. This was the opposite of what I had read online (coolant in the transmission fluid). After a few calls to local transmission and auto shops, they confirmed that this is a common issue among 05 Pathfinders and found it very likely that my transmission was shot if transmission oil was found in the radiator since the 05 design could enable coolant and tranny fluid to go into either the radiator or transmission. After Walser Nissan's diagnosis, they made me the following offer as a part of Nissan's "Customer Satisfaction Program" - I pay a deductible of $2,500 and Walser will replace the radiator and transmission with new units. The local shops stated this was an excellent deal and to take it, which I did because I planned on keeping it for a few more years. I'm still unsure why Walser could not duplicate the problem when even my kids noticed the vibration while driving, Walser gave me a rental car while the work was being done and the new parts now work well (no vibration while accelerating and the heater works while idling). I love the Pathfinder and have had no issues with it other than this one. Given the moronic design which allows coolant to leak into, arguably, the most critical and expensive part of a vehicle, I don't think I will ever buy another Nissan and will tell anyone who asks the same. This is unfortunate because I was considering upgrading to an Armada, however I will likely go for a new model Explorer.

My car model is 2005. It was a disgraceful thing to ride a big jeep like that and you are stranded due to transmission failure, the worse case is the transmission oil not easily accessible in the market. i think i will need to replace the car.

Been having problems with transmission. Car would vibrate on freeway on overdrive. Then it came down to gears slipping when at a complete stop and trying to pull out. A mechanic did a diagnosis and all codes read "transmission errors". I had already heard of all the problems these pathfinders have been having and how Nissan refuses to take responsibility for them. I did not want to pay $200+ just so they can tell me the transmission/ coolant needs to be replaced. The car is no longer drivable. I keep finding all these forums on Nissan complaints and how they settled on that sorry lawsuit charging owners a ridiculous copay. On top of that because my mileage is over 100,000 I would need to pay for the repairs in full! Are you kidding me?? This really sucks. The car interior and exterior is still in great shape its the engine that's a load of crap and I can't afford to cough up $7,000 just to fix it. Never again will I ever buy anything Nissan. I have also shared this with a lot of friends and family warning them never to buy a Nissan. They DO NOT STAND BY THEIR PRODUCT!

I, like hundreds possibly thousands of others have incurred a failed radiator that may have caused serious transmission problems. I am replacing my radiator and double flushing the transmission in hopes that it is salvageable. I will post and update. I have heard that Nissan will not stand by its product and do a recall. I plan to save every receipt of every expense and turn this over to Nissan.

If your whole truck vibrates when downshifting on the highway, you have a $7000 problem in your hands. This covers all 2005-2010 pathfinders. I don't know when it started because this was my wife's truck and you won't notice it at low speeds like around 45mph and below. Her work is near our home so she doesn't need to go to the highways so she didn't notice.

I'd like to know from the members here if the fix is still bound to fail so I will trade it in. I don't wanna pay additional $7K when the transmission breaks down AGAIN.

This is a known problem that should be covered under warranty and not a warranty that sets the limits above the repairs so they don't have to pay any compensation; this issue is hurting Nissan's credibility as a quality automobile.

Pathfinder SE 4.0L

Looks like Nissan has extended the warranty again to avoid admitting a defect in the radiator. Here are the details of the extension:

Up to 8 years/80,000 miles (whichever comes first): No customer co-pay After 8 years/80,000 miles (whichever comes first) up to 9 years/90,000 miles (whichever comes first): Customer co-pay is $2,500 After 9 years/90,000 miles (whichever comes first) up to 10 years/100,000 miles (whichever comes first): Customer co-pay is $3,000

Basically Nissan is taking a calculate risk here. By slightly extending the warranty and caring for just enough cases, their hope is to calm enough of the masses and avoid a recall. According to CarComplaint.com, the average owner is becoming aware of a problem at 94,565 miles. If Nissan would have recalled the radiators immediately upon knowledge of the defect, it would have saved them from dealing with numerous transmission replacements and customer satisfaction concerns. Transmissions have been reported to totally fail while driving on congested highways raising safety concerns. One can lodge a complaint to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration at the link below.

According to DOT, the average driver in the US drives 13,476 miles a year. It is interesting to note on the NissanAssist website that the CVT warranty extension is 12y/120,000m.

I am no lawyer, but hopefully someone with legal expertise can comment on the class action lawsuit. It seems like potentially one needs to opt out if they find the terms unacceptable and can attend or be represented at a Fairness Hearing on March 14, 2013 in White Plains, NY.

I took my car to Brown's Nissan Fairfax VA who investigated the clunking transmission. They determined there was radiator fluid in the transmission and both the radiator and transmission need to be replaced. Cost is $5800. I cannot drive the car until this issue is fixed. Nissan gave me a compliant # its been one week and have not heard back from them. Very disappointed because they knew of this issue over three years ago and did not notify me of anything. Two years later, the car is broken because of their lack of notifying me a customer who spent $35k on a Nissan. What a disappointment.

Pathfinder XE

  • Automatic transmission
  • 92,000 miles

The problem started with a sudden loss of acceleration, then the check engine light came out. I took it to a local mechanic who said the light was related to a solenoid valve. They couldn't duplicate the problem and the battery was registering as nearly failed, so they replaced the battery. A week later the same problem occurred. This time I took it to Nissan. They diagnosed it as the radiator leaking into the transmission and estimated the fix at $5900. I was then asked if I'd like a salesperson to call me back. I told them no and left with the car. I took the car to a respectable mechanic who confirmed the diagnosis. He was well aware of this problem and informed me that the fix which Nissan performs simply band-aids the problem and doesn't fix it. They bypass the cooling of the transmission (i.e. only cooling is from the air flowing through). He told me they would fix it correctly. They ended up replacing the radiator and transmission. The total cost was $6263.81 at the mechanic, $374.74 for the Nissan diagnosis,$102.90 for the Goodyear incorrect diagnosis, and $200.57 for a rental car for the week, for a grand total of $6942.02. I am extremely unhappy that Nissan never informed their customers that this was a manufacturing defect which would cost an arm and leg to fix.

Pathfinder SE 4.0L V6

About 3 weeks ago in the middle of the SoCal heatwave I noticed my AC wasn't blowing cool air...it was actually hot air. I also noticed that my engine was heating up like crazy while I was sitting still but would cool down when I started driving. So I check my coolant level and it was low so I topped it off. I checked for leaks but couldn't find any. I rarely drive this vehicle nowadays so it is almost always parked in the driveway and there are no leak spots of any sort on the driveway. yesterday I noticed that my transmission started shaking lightly and slipping a bit when starting from a stand-still, especially when shifting from 1st to 2nd (auto tranny)....didn't notice it too much in the upper gears but haven't really tested it. took it into a repair shop and I told them the symptoms and left. within an hour or 2 they called me and said I had water in my tranny and this came internally from the radiator...ding ding that would explain why there were no spill spots but my radiator fluid was low. several hundred bucks later the repair shop replaced my radiator and told me to keep an eye on the tranny and to come back in 6 months to do a tranny flush. they also told me this is a very common issue with 2005 Nissan Pathfinders and that Googling it will come up with plenty of hits. And now I found out that it is and there are possible lawsuits and such stating that Nissan knows about this but wont do a thing about it. This really sours me on Nissan...I've had a Maxima, Altima, and the Pathfinder. I'm thinking of putting my name into any class action lawsuit and will not be buying anymore nissans and will tell all my family and friends not to buy nissan. shame on you nissan!

Transmission is toast. Tool it took Brasso Nissan in Calgary who I have dealt with for 17 years and bought 4 vehicles from, as recently as 9 months ago for my daughter.

Since I stopped taking it there when warranty ran out (I live and work in another city) they said neither they nor Nissan Canada can help me.

I 'was' a loyal Nissan customer but now I'm p#%^ssed!!! I'm a single mom who needs her car to get to work and can't afford a repair nor a new vehicle but I have to bite the bullet in the repair just to stay out of debt.

Apparently, loyalty is only as good as the last sale.... Once you're out the door Nussan us done with you :(
