Rogue SV

  • CVT transmission
  • 52,000 miles

I bought 2011 Nissan Rogue SV in 2015 with a mileage of around 4,000, unaware of CVT issue. In 2018, into 30,000 mileage range, I was driving on highway, and all of suddenly the acceleration slowed down without warning; no light or whatsoever. I pushed the gas pedal all the way down, and it did not pick up (a semi-truck nearly rear-ended me). I had to pull over, and wait 15 minutes. It picked up, yet 5 miles down the highway, the acceleration issue happened again, and again until we reached the destination, which was 50 miles away from original spot.

I was told it needed a transmission flush and advised it is requires every 30,000 mileage with CVT (imagine my dumbfounded shock). 52,000 mileage, the engine light came on and acceleration issue happens again. I took it to the shop, and Mechanic ran diagnosis; CVT Torque Converter or low fluid. I went to second shop for the second diagnosis; the same result. They checked and said it is a transmission that has to be replaced because fluid is full and too early for a flush.

I am pulling my hair out because it is too expensive to replace the transmission and likely will happen again. I am very, very angry that I have to rent a vehicle to drive out of town, and working on getting auto loan to replace Nissan rogue. Nissan is finished. It is off my list. If there is Class Action Lawsuit, please send me information. I would join in a heartbeat! Please let me. I should sue Dealership that sold me defective vehicles too! I am sooo mad.

Update from Nov 26, 2019: I am scared to drive everyday, especially at nights.

  • 113,320 miles

This vehicle had 75,000 miles when I purchased it. It was running pretty well, until we were driving to a Dr.'s appointment on Monday, July 8th, 2019 and we lost power and almost got rear-ended 4 times! We had to wait 4 1/2 hours to have our car towed over 60 miles home. In the mean time, we sat in a car with no power to wait for the tow truck. The temp was in the 90's! We have had the car for 3 years and have kept up ALL maintenance on the vehicle. I purchased a contract to take care of all major repairs to the car, but unfortunately it ran out a little while before this occurrence. Prior to this, the air conditioning went out in the car 2 weeks ago, and had it fixed for over $1,000.00 dollars! Now the transmission has gone out! I am NOT made out of money and do not appreciate having both of these repairs so close together! Any rebates/or financial assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Rogue 2.5L

  • CVT transmission
  • 130,000 miles

On June 15, 2018, I was driving on the freeway and my Nissan Rogue 2011 with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) started to lose power for no apparent reason, and it decelerated from 70 to 40 miles per hour (mph) in a 70 mph zone. The engine was making a whining noise while revving at high RPM's. I tried to accelerate back up to the speed limit and it wouldn't accelerate more than 40 mph and the engine continued to rev at high RPM's. I had to pull over to the freeway shoulder and put my hazard lights on while driving 40 mph. I exited the off ramp and stopped at the stop sign.

When I tried to accelerate, the car was very sluggish and I had to pull over to the side of the road again because it wasn't accelerating and was driving at about 2 mph. The only way I could drive was to down shift to Low and drive at low speed on surface streets. Cars were honking their horns behind me because my car would take 5 - 10 seconds to move forward from a stop sign. I had to stay in Low gear because it wouldn't accelerate in regular Drive gear.

I shouldn't be having transmission problems on a 2011 vehicle. I read that Nissan extended the warranty for Nissan Rogue transmissions built 2008 and 2010 from 5 years/60,000 miles to 10 years/120,000 miles, but that program ended on July 31, 2010. My Nissan Rogue was built in 2011.

On June 19, 2018, I took my Nissan Rogue to a Nissan dealership in Reno and I was informed that it was going to cost $2,648 to replace the valve body and install a transmission cooler, but there was no guarantee that it was going to last long enough to warrant the expense. I contacted Nissan Consumer Affairs to ask them if they would extend the warranty for my transmission or compensate me for the defective CVT transmission.

I received a call from Nissan Consumer Affairs and was informed that Nissan wasn't going to cover the cost of replacing or repairing my transmission. It was odd to hear that the recommended repairs include installing a transmission cooler, which isn't part of the original design. The fact that my transmission only lasted 7 years and that the recommended repairs includes installing a transmission cooler indicates that the 2nd generation CVT transmissions weren't designed and vetted properly.

I asked the Nissan dealer how much they would give me for my Nissan Rogue as a trade-in and they only offered me $2,000 when the trade-in value ranges between $2,741 and $4,054. That tells me that they know my Nissan Rogue is a lemon. The Nissans made with 2nd generation CVT transmissions are continuing to experience transmission problems as indicated in all the on-line reviews and my personal experience. Nissan spent all that money advertising new Nissan Rogues with the backup camera when they could have spent the money on fixing the transmission issues.

Rogue SV 2.5L

  • CVT transmission
  • 103,200 miles

I bought this car used on 6/16/18 and 4 days later with no warning, I couldn't get the car to accelerate. From 60mph to 10 mph in an instant on a 3 lane highway. I had looked at reviews on Edmunds and cars.com and some people had not seen anything about this or would have NEVER bought the car. It was a very dangerous situation on a busy road. When you specifically enter a search for no acceleration there is a flood of people this has happened to.

Nissan hasn't made an effort to provide a recall or extend the warranty for repair on the 2011 model, only to 2010 Rogues. Shame on the dealership for selling me a dangerous car (Toyota in Akron) but even more for Nissan to put peoples lives in danger. Now I am stuck with a car payment and an out of pocket $3400.00 to fix the car too. I have always been told how Nissans will last forever so I am really disappointed to find out that so many people have had this issue and have been in such scary situations on busy roads. How is this not a problem worth a recall, you are putting the lives of people who trusted in the Nissan name for safety and quality in seriously dangerous situations and not doing anything to rectify the situation.

I for 1 am filing a claim/complaint with Nissan. NHSTA.com, and the Better Business Bureau and posting reviews, not shining 5 stars either in regards to this about Nissan and the Dealership who ensured me that the car had an extensive check of all systems and everything was in perfect working order.

Rogue SV AWD 2.5L

  • CVT transmission
  • 72,079 miles

Bought 2011 Rogue in April 2015. In May 2017, vehicle went into "limp mode" (won't rev above 3000 RPM) while driving the mountainous Coquihalla Highway in BC. Made it home, brought into dealership, told the transmission overheated and we need to install a cooling kit at a cost of $1700 CAD. We were past the manufacturer's warranty but covered under a supposedly comprehensive after-market warranty (First Canadian Protection Ultimate). FCPP wouldn't pay for it because it's an addition to the vehicle, not replacing a faulty part. Harassed Nissan but they were unsympathetic. Paid out of pocket to have it installed and it hasn't overheated since.

However, over the year since this happened we have noticed that the vehicle has an increasingly rough idle and is inconsistent in its shifting while accelerating from a stop (sometimes lugs along at 1500 RPM, sometimes jumps up to 3000 RPM with barely any gas). The dealership told us during the initial assessment they were 90% sure we needed a new transmission, but now we are fighting to get it replaced because it hasn't thrown any more codes- it just shows symptoms of damage.

We are 2500 km away from our warranty ending and concerned the transmission may give out after that point. Very disappointed Nissan has not extended the recall on the 2008-2010 Rogues to include this year. Will never buy another Nissan. We enjoyed the vehicle otherwise but have had a very unpleasant experience, and now have a car we have no confidence in, with 2 years of payments left.

My 7 year old Nissan Rouge started losing acceleration when I put my foot on the gas, talk about scary and dangerous. No warning lights came on. I took it to a local mechanic and he told me my transmission needed to be replaced. I took it to the dealership after I read on line all the transmission issues the 2011 Rogue and called Nissan consumer affairs. They were not helpful at all and will not help cover anything. I will be filing a BBB complaint and will tell everyone I know to stay away from Nissan and any car with a CVT trans.

I switched from Ford to Nissan because I heard they were super reliable and last forever, wow did I make a bad decision. My Mom has one as well and its a few years older, her trans went out as well at 116,000 miles and it was covered. I expect repairs on a car with 81,000 miles on it but normal wear and tear not to have a trans replaced. Bad move Nissan, I will never own one ever again and I will scream and shout how bad your cars are.

After driving for about two hours and going up hills the car automatically slows down on it's on. You can press the gas pedal, but the RPM's won't go up above two. It basically sounds like you're gunning it while it's in neutral. You have to pull over and let the car cool down and heaven forbid if it's hot in the middle of summer, because it will take a good hour to get it to cool down enough to be able to drive it again.

Took it to a mechanic and he says the timing belt is messed up on it and will eventually need to be fixed or it will go out. This past year the car shimmies whenever you start it. Some days worse than others. Last time I will ever own a Nissan... PERIOD

Purchased 2011 Nissan Rogue SV AWD on 12-30-2014 for my daughter and mileage was 28K. She used the vehicle very reasonable just to and from medical school and to come home town and regularly did maintenance of the vehicle. The current mileage is 45682 and she recently went to Horseheads, NY on 1-23-2018 without any problem for her practice exam. But on 1-26-2018 when she drove 2 miles she suddenly noticed the vehicle is not moving and WON'T ACCELERATE/STOPS WHILE DRIVING. She also noticed check engine light is on. She went to Nissan dealer for diagnostic. Dealer said issue with Transmission and it needs to be replace and I paid diagnostic cost for the dealer.

After reading the many online complaints about this CVT transmission I realized that the transmission was simply defective from the start. Now will have to replace entire transmission at a cost of approximately $4,000.00. Nissan Rogue owners with this faulty CVT system need to voice their concerns so that Nissan does the right thing and replaces the defective CVT transmission. This should not happen to car with approximately 46 K miles.

Further the transmission issues are know issues for Nissan Rogue since long time and Nissan did CVT Warranty Extension to provide its customers with additional assurance regarding their overall cost of ownership, Nissan doubled the warranty period for the CVT transmission in the 2008-2010 Nissan Rogue. The existing powertrain warranty coverage of 5 years/60,000 miles was extended at no cost, for CVT repairs, replacements or related towing, up to 10 years/120,000 miles (whichever comes first).

Based on above I opened case with Nissan consumer affairs (Case #29665859) to cover transmission replacement cost. Towed my vehicle from NY to VA and dropped of the vehicle at Nissan dealer at my home town based on case manager recommendation. But now they are asking to pay again diagnostic charges even though it was done at Nissan dealer and they know the issue. I believe all technicians are trained by Nissan because both are Nissan dealers and this is totally unfair to ask customer to pay again form the same diagnostic twice.

I will file complaint with NTSB at safecar.gov soon. Will go to Virginia Division of Consumer Affairs next if Nissan does not cover the cost of a new (non defective) CVT transmission.

Update from Feb 7, 2018: I also filed complaint with NHTSA#11071629.

Update from Feb 9, 2018: Nissan came back and they offered 80/20 split for the replacement of the defected transmission and I accepted the offer.

Purchased 2011 Nissan Rogue new in 2010. Ever since I owned the vehicle it would intermittently pop out of gear, especially on highway at high speeds. The car would then reengage into gear and accelerate. Apparently the CVT transmission was defective and Nissan is now indicating to me that although the later model year cars were given an extended warranty for the faulty CVT transmission my car is not covered.

After reading the many online complaints about this CVT transmission I realized that the transmission was simply defective from the start. Now will have to replace entire transmission at a cost of approximately $3,700.00. Nissan Rogue owners with this faulty CVT system need to voice their concerns so that Nissan does the right thing and replaces the defective CVT transmission. This should not happen to car with approximately 88,000 miles.

Filed a complaint with NTSB (#11060897) at safecar.gov. Will go to Florida Division of Consumer Affairs next if Nissan does not cover the cost of a new (non defective) CVT transmission.

Update from Jan 12, 2018: Nissan denied repair costs. This is not new and am creating a website for class action lawsuit. Apparently what they do is blame the owner, especially single mothers. that have nowhere to turn to. The only reason I speak of lawsuits is because my former husband has dealt with issues like this and the behavior is not atypical (i.e., blame owner for the defective CTS system and being ripped off by NISSAN.

At 68k miles, after purchasing a 2011 Nissan Rouge with 0 miles we had transmission issues. When we took long trips after a long drive when we came to a stop or slowed down on the freeway, the car would not accelerate. We were in the middle of the desert when it happened the first time and my husband cleaned out the air filter thinking that was the issue. Thankfully after a while we got back on the freeway and drove very slow home. The car was sluggish almost as if it lost power to the engine and took long to start moving faster. It was extremely nerve wrecking driving the car like that and we were pretty far from home. When we took into Nissan they said the whole transmission needed to be replaced. Thankfully we had purchased the extended warranty. We are still making payments on the car currently.

2011 Nissan Rogue, had transmission problem a while back. Lucky I had bought the extended warranty, because the transmission would not shift out of park, they said out of warranty and $750.00 to fix. Then they said oh, you have the extended warranty $50.00. Now the extended warranty has expired by 6 months and the car will not move, throttles up but won't budge. From what I'm reading it's a know problem that Nissan will not acknowledge. They had a recall on 2010s from what I read, but still had the problem with 2011s. I don't know why they can't be forced to recall this problem.

We would press on accelerator and nothing would happen. Press harder and eventually we would start moving. On interstate could only get up to 45 mph. CVT transmission was whining. Interesting note: the car senses the transmission overheating and limits performance to keep car from further damage, "limp mode", hence the lack of response and inability to maintain speed. Diagnosis was that transmission was overheating. Fix was to replace valve body in transmission and install aux transmission oil cooler. Found out in 2012 Nissan extended warranty on the transmission to 10 years/ 120000 miles for 2010 year models and earlier. From online posts it is apparent they did not fix the problem on later models though. Obviously the fix Is the aux cooler. Contacted Nissan national. They were polite and helpful and assigned a case number. They contacted dealer to get details, but I have not heard yet from them if they plan to stand behind their vehicle.

Update from Jul 30, 2017: Dealer fixed problem quickly. Nissan North America agreed to reimburse me for parts only.

We were vacationing in San Francisco and driving back to Utah across I-80 in Nevada. The speed limit is 75 or 80 mph. While driving home, we were traveling up hill at about 80 mph and passing a semi. All of a sudden our cruise control shut off and our car slowed to about 65 mph and I ended up pulling behind the truck due to traffic coming up behind me. Once I got over the hill, I was able to travel about 75 - 75 mph but could not go any faster. We pulled off the freeway in a small town and stopped at a red light. When I tried to go, my car would only go about 5 mph for about 100 feet and then picked up some speed. After stopping, turning off the car and letting it rest, it seemed to work OK for about an hour. This happened 4 times between Reno and SLC, Ut.

I see that this is an on-going problem for many people. I've read several thougths on the problem on the internet, if someone can tell me what the problem is and how to fix it, I would greatly appreciate your help.

Rogue S

  • 109,000 miles

So this is our 2nd Nissan vehicle, and we were happy with the Rogue for awhile , however, there's always been something wrong with it. Last year I had to replace the left rear handle to the outside of the door, as when I opened it one day it ripped OFF!! Nissan wanted $550 to fix it, I found out the door handle costs about $15!!! Ridiculous. So I found a good honest company that even charged me less than originally quoted because it only took them about 10 minutes to replace the door handle. Ended up costing about $80!!!

For the last few years the car sometimes loses RPM's and speed will very. Sometimes it made me feel crazy, but then it would work fine. However, today was different, my husband was driving home on the freeway and all of a sudden the speed reduced on the car, and it wouldn't go above 60mph. It was stuck on 4000 RPMS, so he pulled over the side of the freeway and checked the oil it was perfect, but he did notice almost a smell of something being on fire.... So he got back into the car to see if he could make it to a small auto shop. He explained what happened and the man stated that it sounds like the Transmission, and that there had been a recall so to call Nissan. I called Nissan and even though I purchased our Rogue at the end of 2010, it is a 2011 rogue and doesn't qualify for the recall. They said I have to take it into Nissan to be properly diagnosed by their technicians before they will say if they can or will cover any of the cost. RIDICULOUS!! So said that they would treat a good hard working AMERICAN family this way. We were big supporters of NISSAN and we will no longer be that way. We bought and paid for our product, and it didn't barely make 6 years?? What kind of product are they selling?? I found this site online about all of the complaints, and I know there have to be SOOOO many more!

We are moving over to TOYOTA as we purchased one already and they have great service, products and back everything up unlike NISSAN.

We will also be teaching our kids about quality products and how they should NEVER own a NISSAN!!! They are just very cheaply made, and they are not a company that stands for much of anything let alone their word.

Very disappointed :(
