well the dealer said it was a knocking in the colum and it was safe to drive. But a bit prior to that my son had hit someone from behind and he said it was the steering he couldn't turn in time. I didnt believe him at first but with all the complaints i just heard regarding this car, i would have sued. i was going to give him the car now, as it is repaired, not the knocking though but am changing my mind as someone could get hurt. remember the company that builds our cars dont care if you live or die because they have insurance coverage, and they go home at night to mansions,

Update from Apr 24, 2014: I recently checked the Column where it enters the firewall and there is a metal cylinder which looks like it was grinded at one end. I am thinking that it either had been worked on or its a bad design. Never the less if you hold the neck with your hand and turn the wheel the knock is heavy. There was a bulletin on another site which states that grease is needed? I called Gm Canada and they said they never heard of this problem? I am going to call some Garages to find a common repair for this. Remember always keep receipts in case of a recall.

I bought the car and noticed that it was pulling to the left a little so asked them to do an alignment. They did so and said nothing about anything else being wrong. After having the car for a few days I noticed the clunking when I turned both right and left. I took it in and they said I needed to replace the shaft and ball joints on both the drivers and passenger side. along with the cv shaft. I did this and less than 2 weeks later had to replace the cv shaft again. It has been about a month since I had it changed last and now it is popping again. It feels like something is binding up and I am really afraid to keep driving it. I cannot afford to be sending my car to the shop every couple months to get something fixed that should be lasting for several years. I have only owned the car for a few months and I will probably be cutting my losses very soon and trading it in. It sickens me to think of the loss I will take on the car but safety is more important and I do not feel this car is safe at all.

I got my car in 07, noticed some different noises, a humming when I was going like 15 mph I took it back in had the place listen, they determined it was "tire noise" I was told that by a few people, over time the noise stopped. Now there has been a "clunk" when I back up and crank the wheel at the same time..They just told me its probably the ball joint and could be a problem with the intermediate steering..Now I see on this site obviously this is a common problem with these cars.. I do have an extended warranty that covers ball joints and steering probs..just waiting now to see what the warranty place says if the dealer can go ahead and try fixing the problem..But I have a feeling by reading these complaints it wont be the end of the "clunk".. I Just want a safe car to drive for me and my daughter sakes :(

Now the car is at 87,000 miles AND....

I recently replaced the lower control arm on the drivers side , the rack n pinion , the inner and outer tie rods have been replaced , and the car still has issues noises pops and crackles .. Now the EGR valve ... Really that is 300.00 alone I am broke and unemployed!!! This damn car will not start half the time because of the EGR and it starts better if it has a full tank of gas ! Who can afford that these days ,Apparently my Pontiac thinks I wont he lottery over night because every morning it is a new problem!!

I have a Pontiac G6 with 135k miles on it and this year I started having steering issues with my car pulling to the left and making a horrible vibration feeling on the right. In Feb 2011, I replaced the control arm as well as the outer tie rods and alignment only to still be having problems with my tires wearing out. I brought new tires last year to only have to by more this year is ridiculous. I have never had this problem with any of my cars in the past. There should definitely be a recall on this! I won’t ever by another Pontiac.

I just had a recall on my Power Steering Position Sensor, but I still have to have my Power Steering I Shaft fixed. It has been about 3 months when it was detected, but I had to have my Position Sensor fixed first. After I get that paid for my car can go back to the shop AGAIN to get my Power Steering I Shaft fixed. It just never ends!!!!! I could have just as well have bought an $6-$8,000 car if I was going to have all these repairs!!! I am not real happy with Pontiac right now!!!!! I don't know what kind of a car to buy anymore!!! They are all getting more and more expensive and being made cheaper and cheaper. You just don't know what to buy anymore.

Well, all I could say is Never buy a used car from Healy Brothers Auto Sales. Buying this vehicle from them was a very big mistake...(trading my Durango for this car was a even a bigger mistake). Within the 90 day warranty I brought the vehicle back three or four times. I had the radio changed twice...(eventually I had the radio replaced out of my pocket), the clunking noise coming from the intermediate steering shaft, they lubed the joint to temporary fix the problem, a bent rim which I did not notice for about 3 days after I brought the car. I told the salesperson about the rim and they basically gave me the runaround (waiting for approval to change the rim) for the entire warranty time left and refused to fix the bent rim due to the warranty running out. And then I discovered that the vehicle was involved in some type of accident, where the car pulls to the left all the time... even after a wheel alignment. I am just one of the stories from Healy's deals. And after viewing all of the complaints of the Pontiac G6 steering problem... I don't know why Pontiac has not made a decision in doing some type of re-call or are they are waiting until someone dies from this intermediate steering shaft problem. Maybe following in Toyota's path...

My 05' G6 has a horrible steering problem. My first time driving it in the snow i was in the ditch three times on the same street, then almost hit on coming cars when the car decided to swerve to the left at a busy intersection when i tried to stop.

Since then i have to drive my husbands crappy car made in the mid 80's any time it has snowed even a little bit. Along with everyone else on here it also took my car in for an estimate, and found that it would be around 800 atleast to MAYBE fix the problem. I don't have the money either, I think this deffinately needs to be recalled.

I had the clunking noise in the column. I took it to the dealer and it was replaced under warranty. Now I have the same problem again at 54000 miles. The dealer says it is not covered under warranty. I'm looking at trading in this car since I have had so many issues with it already.

To any Pontiac mechanic know it all I am going to post this opinion and you can cover it up or say you know everything, but the hell with you. I have an 05 G6 and bought it with 26000 miles at only 1.5 years old, still really new one owner. A week later it had some knocking down in the steering column. Took it in, fixed gear assembly, set tire pressure and D set front toe, this was 09/06. 12/06 took in again, they replaced column, said steering gear too much backlash!!??? AGAIN, im in shop 2/07, replaced steering gear AGAIN, set toe. 10/07 and I only wish I was kidding, I was back to Pontiac, this time,ha pulled bolt off intermediate shaft, then spray lube on i-shaft, bolt back down, pump it up and down then rotate 180 degrees, and "FINE." March of Damn 08, what do you guess? Steering shaft again replaced, this time made them pay for rental. And car was out of warranty. Here we are today, 07/09, yes folks we made it just over a year with no noise, all of the SUDDEN. MY SEXY lil G6 is in the shop again!!! Intermediate steering shaft being replaced AGAIN. Ok why doesn't GM do something about this? I see that many others have smae problem and all i can tell you is, if you have this problem and you have had replaced more than two times or so, be consistant if you are out of your warranty. I think Pontiac is full aware of the problem, cause they didn't give me a hard time and I now have 67,000 miles on car. It's a great car and luckily car is perfect other than that. I think there should be a lifetime warranty as many times as I have had that car in the shop for the same part. So don't give up if your having this problem and have had fixed a few times before. Or if you feel like they are not checking what they should, they are probably not. Tell them to look at this if it's your problem.

clunking noise from steering clunking noise from steering

This car got great gas milage, was really sharp & everything my daughter wanted for her 16th birthday. On May 11th, 2009 all 3 of our children were on their way to school my daughter was driving 45 mph on the S curves (asphalt paving) when the steering locked up. They rolled the car, the air bags did not go off, we are assuming because it wasn't a front impact accident - the car was trailored to the Chevy Garage where they did a fault code reading - no fault codes found. The car was totaled!!! - I'm telling everyone I see driving a G6 of this wreck and referring them to www.carcomplaints.com - There isn't any recalls on the steering, only complaints from people like us. We thought about getting a attorney but with the government buyout stuff going on - thought it would be like trying to get blood out of a turnip. We can't help to think that Pontiac is aware of this problem... but until someone dies I doubt anything will be done. Please take the time to write your complaint and warn your friends and loved ones of this problem.

I took my car in because it stated that there was a problem with the power steering (which should be considered a recall, if you ask me) and when driving home 2 days later I noticed that there was a slight rattling noise coming from somewhere around the steering wheel, then called them took it and they took care of it at to charge. It was just a pain, I mean I took it in for one problem and I came out with another! UGH

First off I get in this car for a test drive and the check engine light is on. I am around cars all day long and just figured it was something minor and they would fix it before I bought it anyway. Didn't seem as if anything was wrong except the light was on. I do got to say that these little cars have a lot of pickup but when you increase speed it pulls to one side as if a ball joint is loose or something. Also sometimes when you start the car, nothing happens for a brief second and you let the key go, it starts by itself. Both power points in the car no longer works and I have checked all of the fuses under the hood and on the passenger side panel of more fuses that took me for ever to find. The multi-disc CD changer sometimes has a mind of its own. Its works great most of the time but them I had a couple times where it looked as if there was a short somewhere and it cuts out briefly as well.
