PULLED INTO A PARKING LOT AND POWER STEERING CUT OUT. THIS APPEARS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL CAR MULTIPLE YEARS. THERE IS NO RECALL AS OF YET. HOPEFULLY I WILL NOT GET IN AN ACCIDENT OR PONTIAC WILL NEED TO GET THEIR LAWYERS OUT, OR THEY COULD JUST RECALL THE PROBLEM AND FIX IT, AS THAT IS THE RESPONSIBLE THING TO DO.

This is regarding the power steering assist recall 14117. They replaced the power steering motor and torque sensor. Since then my steering has been sloppy and even scary. There is a slight jerk in the steering wheel as if the car is trying to steer itself. At higher speeds the car will drift slightly due to this movement in the steering wheel and you have to constantly correct the steering. Then the steering becomes really loose. After becoming loose the car steering doesn't react like it usually does. Turning the steering wheel in one direction or the other slightly usually causes the car to go in that direction but when loosened the car is not responding right away. As a driver the feedback of the car not responding is frightening and makes lane changes and careful steering around obstacles scary.

The steering wheel loosens even when stopped and in park or stopped at a light. The steering wheel can be turned quite a bit and the steering is not responding. You can pull out of an intersection with the steering wheel turned and the car is still going straight. Other times the steering is responsive right away. While in park the steering wheel can be turned right around and then some with no resistance and very little movement in the wheels. Other times you can barely turn the steering wheel because of (I think normal resistance). I have felt the steering wheel lose almost all resistance while doing a left turn and the wheel had to be turned a ridiculous amount.

What's really concerning is that the steering in my G6 died totally in 2009/2010 already. See pontiacg6owner experience. That is me!!! I had my steering column replaced then and believed this was a recall issue then. They finally recall that issue but don't think the steering column for 2008 models should be replaced!!!? Mine already has been. Then they replace a part that starts the same power steering issues I had in 2009!!!? The service guy even saw the steering wheel in the loosened state at the garage while the car was in park! Later he calls me and he and the mechanics can't reproduce the problem again so there is nothing they can do!! They don't see any error codes. The first steering failure in my car didn't produce any error codes either but the steering became intermittently sloppy and loose until the powered steering failed completely.

There needs to be a recall on the recall!!!!!!! My steering is failing again and GM mechanics don't have a grip on this dangerous issue.

Steering wheel started shaking for a few days, and I thought it was the front end so I went to have it serviced. On the way to the auto shop, the steering wheel locked and I saw a "power steering" display warning.

The mechanic informed me that there was a recall on the same model in 2006, and some others in 2008 so I called a local dealership. Ironically, the manufacturer doesn't have a recall for MY vehicle even though it has the same problem as the other recalled cars. I found out that all of the auto shops estimate that the repairs will cost $1,200 which is ludicrous.

After further research online, I see that this is a problem with MANY other G6s.

At this point, I'm talking to an attorney about filing a class action lawsuit against GM if they don't repair my car.

It was not resolved until I applied for the lemon law - the dealer keep fixing other componets but not the one with the problem - this was during the anouncement of Ponitac being discontinued and I felt the employees of the service dept. felt disgrunted.

GM offers no concideration for the fact that this problem is reported to agencies such as car fax and other types of used car information services that dearlerships use to beat you down on the trade-in value.

The most fustraiting aspect of this is it will come back to haunt me when I want to sell or trade it in.

I had this problem and did much research, and after calling Pontiac directly they finally told me that the warrenty had just been bumped up to 10 years, 100,000 miles. Not only that but the drivetrain warrenty was also extended! Thats why sites like this one work.

We actually have two Pontiac G6's, both 2008. My daughter's car was the one with the steering issue. In the beginning it was only loud popping in the steering column when you would turn the wheel but it eventually turned to worse issues. You could be driving her car down the road and the steering would just jerk to one side, no way to control it. Just sitting at a stop light the steering wheel would just start moving side to side, whether your hands were on the steering wheel or not. This is very unsafe! What if my daughter's car would have went into the other lane with oncoming traffic? It could have been disastrous! This was not a one time occurrence, this happened quite often. Cost us almost $450.00 to have the steering wheel motor replaced. Disappointed that we have not seen a recall on this because if we end up having to do the same thing for my car I will not be happy about having to drop another $450.00, nor will I be happy if it causes me to have an accident!

In the fall of 2009 my steering suddenly started having too much play and the wheel would vibrate especially when it was hot outside. I took to the dealer and they couldn't get it to happen again and said nothing was wrong. It has now starting again in mid to late May with the weather warming up. I think that it is an electrical problem as the power steering is electrical. Doesn't happen all the time so I am waiting for it to happen so I can take the car to the dealer.

My 4 month old car started leaking steering fluid which should never happen. Faulty gearbox was the cause. Dealer replaced the whole thing under warranty. So far it has lasted another 40,000 miles with no issues.

I have not had my 2008 Pontiac G6 for a full year yet and the faulty steering issues I am reading about are showing up already!!!!! Yesterday the steering acted up where steering to the left is very loose while steering to the right is very tight. While making a left turn I felt I lost some control over the steering. Too much play on the steering and I was not sure how much I needed to turn the steering wheel to make my turn safely. It scared me! I became very focused on the steering performance after that and noticed that left turns were loose and and the steering wheel moved loosely while on right turns the steering wheel was rigid and could not be moved and required more force in making the turn. This is not right! I will have my pontiac looked at and hopefully parts can be replaced under warranty. This is truly unsafe! How can intermittent and unpredictable loss of control of your vehicle due to mechanical malfunction not warrant a recall?!!!

Update from May 22, 2010: I brought my car to the garage and the steering completely failed at the garage. Backing out of my driveway the steering failed. I restarted the car since I read here that it helps to reset the steering. It did help to restart the car. The steering column needed to be replaced and was under waranty. All Pontiac G6 owners need to consider the steering a recall issue and get the steering column replaced especially when they start to notice small steering problems.
