problem #1

Feb 242018

Forester Touring XT 2.0L

  • CVT transmission
  • 30,800 miles

On 2/24/18, my car lost all power on the transition from the 55 south to the 22 west freeway. The fuel indicator showed 60 miles until I had to refuel and the low fuel light was OFF. I was traveling at 70-75 mph, lost power to the engine and had to pull over to the shoulder of the freeway at approximately 9PM (dangerous!). Sensors were saying I still had plenty of fuel, but fuel had stopped making its way into the engine.

I waited a couple of minutes on the shoulder and tried to restart, but the engine wouldn't turn. I had AAA bring me gas, as it felt like I had run out of fuel, and after adding the fuel, the car started back up. I immediately got off the freeway and stopped at the nearest gas station to fuel up. I attempted to fill up the tank and it only allowed me to add 10.5 gallons of gas. I thought it was odd, since I knew my tank should be able to take on more fuel if I had run out???

Here's some quick math: 0 gallons of gas in the tank + 2 gallons from AAA + 10.5 gallons from gas station = 12.5 gallons of gas

2016 Subaru Forester fuel tank = 15.8 gallons

15.8 gallons -12.5 gallons I just added =3.3 gallons of gas missing???

Fuel cannot just go missing. This tells me the sensors are accurate, I still have about 60 miles worth of fuel, but the fuel pump is not pumping fuel to the engine.

This happened again a few weeks later under very similar circumstances. Timmons Subaru in Long Beach checked it, but is saying the sensors are working accurately and that there's nothing wrong with the car.
