I've reported this issue to Subaru Corporate because I was so concerned when this occurred. Their response was pretty melodramatic.
Long story short, while backing up in a tight parking lot I was lightly pressing on the gas pedal to back up. The car was in the middle of backing up and all of a sudden stopped making any movement backwards. I subconsciously stepped on the gas pedal harder thinking that I was running over something small like a bump in the asphalt and then suddenly the car stopped completely and then flew backwards. This whole occurrence took about 2-3 seconds- it was extremely fast. After this happened, the car stalled and turned off. I narrowly missed hitting a porch that was attached to the building. Being extremely confused and dumbfounded, I shifted the car into Park and then started it back up. The car started fine but every engine light that could come on were all on. I work 5 days a week and drive about 75 miles a day round trip so after a few days of hearing no response from Subaru I reset the lights by disconnecting the battery. The car seemed fine.
Subaru eventually got back to me and told me to bring it to the dealership to have it examined. The rep told me that they could get the codes from the box and even though it's been a couple of months since this happened I think I am going to take it to Subaru. My car is past it's warranty because I drive so much but I will keep pursuing this with Subaru because I did not spend $18k for a crapbox. Sad to say but I bought a Subaru because so many people recommended them...
Quick background, I had a Scion xB for my first car for 7 years. It was a standard and i let it go after I hit 136k miles. I should have never let it go because that car was a ROCK. Not only is this an issue but I have excessive oil consumption as well. No one seems to know what's wrong and I found out that the last time I brought it in they updated the computer... my guess is the oil light isn't going to come on after it's usually 3500 miles. I've spent over $200 in extra oil in-between my oil changes to keep my engine from going dry and completely ruining the car.
I was also sold the car under false pretenses. The dealer advertised things the car never came with (heated windshield wipers?) and they claimed it was one owner. When I looked over the CarFax I saw the windshield had been replaced I was given the run around about it's "standard" when reselling a used car. I also have tree sap stains on the car from the prior owner(s) and was told there is nothing they can do because they would damage the paint taking them out. Again.... sold the car with these there... I bought in the winter and thought it was salt. Unfortunately, I needed a car fast so I let the bad explanations go. On top of that I was told the car was one owner... found out it was a fleet vehicle. I found that out when I went to bring it to CarMax... yes, I've tried to get rid of the vehicle. I guess the system they use is different than CarFax and is more detailed. I was far from happy and I've filed a compliant with the dealership, as well as with Subaru Corporate about the dealership.
