Outback Premium 2.5L

  • CVT transmission
  • 4 miles

Since 2010 I have had 6 Subaru Outbacks, all with 2.5L Engine. Their power was acceptable, nothing earth-shattering. My 2020 Outback’s engine is down right piggish. It has horrible acceleration from a stop, it can’t get out of its way, it’s dangerous with not enough power when trying to accelerate to get on freeway ramp. The 2020 2.5L horsepower went from 176 to 182 and no way has as much power as my old 176 HP 2.5.

I have asked many Subaru owners, and the complaints about acceleration are same as mine. I hear a lot about how in 2020 they offered 2.4L Turbo engine as option in 2020 Outback. That's a great engine, it has power you need in everyday driving. I’m not a hot-rodder or piston head, I don’t drive fast. I didn’t bother driving the 2020 2.5L because of all the Outbacks I've had before and was told this new Outback has more horse power. I would have purchased 2.4L Turbo if I would have known.

I love Outbacks, they're great cars, but the standard engine is no good. The Turbo is down and out fast - I figured I didn’t need all that but if I knew the new 2.5L was so bad I might have got Turbo or another brand. I like the Subaru Outback - shame it doesn’t have Honda Passport's standard power. I’ve talked to many Subaru tech’s - they say the new engine is underpowered. I said it’s supposedly has more power and was told it’s all in programming of CVT Subaru more concerned about gas mileage than the performance. Older ones rated on to 32MPG 2020’s 33MPG I like older ones performance way better. That said, possibly if enough people complain, Subaru will redo programming.
