Camry 2.4L

While backing out of a parking lot, a car was approaching and I could not stop my vehicle. I had to press really hard to stop the vehicle.

Camry LE 2.4L L4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 51,550 miles

Brakes did not respond appropriately to amount of pressure applied to the brake pedal while attempting to slow vehicle from 65 mph to approach a hwy exit with moderate but fast traffic. Weather was humid with light rain, about 55-65 degrees in Atlanta, Georgia. Very alarmed that vehicle did not slow down as expected and despite pushing harder on the brake - feared I might rear-end the car ahead. Luckily it was far enough ahead of my approach to avoid an accident. Very scary at the moment. The brakes were soft as I drove in the slow lane and made my way home that day. Reported this experience to my husband. He could not duplicate it when he drove it a few days later in dry weather and said the brakes were fine. Took car in to Toyota dealer for regular service and asked to check the brakes. The service dept reported the brakes were fine on this visit, nothing to be done. I have been driving 35 years in different cities and states with an excellent driving record. I've owned two Toyotas in the past (11 years each) and never experienced "soft" brakes like this. With 2 young drivers in family, I am very concerned about the Camry's braking in the rain. Our teen daughter experienced the soft breaking during driving practice on a humid/light rainy day. Recently took vehicle to dealer again for regular oil change and service. Described my braking experiences in detail to the Toyota dealership serviceman. Since the Toyota's problems with acceleration and braking have come to light in the media, concerns about the Toyota Camry's braking irregularity is legitimate. The dealership mechanic flushed the brake fluid last week and advised that as brake fluid ages it can oxidize and reduce performance. The mechanic reported that air pockets were found when he flushed the brake system and this could have contributed to the "soft" braking. The unpredictability of the brakes is not imaginary. I don't know if replacing the brake fluid has solved the problem yet. I will avoid driving this car at highway speeds in rainy/humid conditions.
