problem #1

Dec 302014

FJ Cruiser V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 70,000 miles

My wife is the primary driver of this vehicle. She noticed a difference in the steering at around 60,000 miles. When in for service at the Toyota dealership she had the shocks and alignment checked. The problem has persisted.

At the latest service at 72000 miles approx. she had the Toyota mechanic check again and he diagnosed the problem as a sleeve in the steering column being worn out. We live 3 miles from the highway on a dirt road. The mechanic blamed the road as the cause of this sleeve wearing out.The part is a few hundred dollars with the labor being a few hundred dollars to install it. Ultimately approx. a 5 hundred dollar bill. What gets to me is that the vehicle is 4 WD and is made to go off road. Now I wonder what will wear out next. We bought this vehicle because we thought that Toyota was a good company with a good reputation. Now I wonder if this vehicle will nickle and dime us.
