August 9, 2019 Toyota sent a letter to dealerships and owners of vehicles with blizzard pearl and super white paint that is peeling. It is titled Customer Support Program ZKG. The letter states that Toyota is aware of the problems with this paint and will offer a repair. It lists several vehicle year and models that will be repaired. Unfortunately the Prius is not one of the models that is on the list. I'm interested to know if anyone who owns a white Prius with peeling paint received a letter for a customer support program about peeling paint on the Prius.

The dealer that services my car has admitted that the issue with my Prius is a factory problems and said that Toyota should do the right thing and pay for the car to be repainted. I have called Toyota Customer Care a few times over the years and gotten nowhere with them. Now the program comes out and apparently will not include the Prius.

My family has only bought Toyotas for the past 25 years. We've owned a Corolla, a Camry, a Sienna and the Prius. I am never buying a Toyota again.

Here are links to a couple of forums that show a picture of the letter:

This car is not covered under the current paint recall but the paint is peeling at an accelerated rate, just like those subject to the recall. Toyota needs to address this issue and offer a solution.

My 2010 Blizzard Pearl Prius started peeling off white yesterday (2-15-21). May sell it before all of its skin falls off. Several other spots look like they may be next. Want to get rid of it before the psoriasis sets in. Filed complaint with Toyota since I am the original owner. Dealer charged $$$ extra for blizzard pearl color when we purchased it. That was the only color in stock at the time on my dealer's lot.

I also have a 2015 Lexus that is white.

Is the disease contagious?

Will the Lexus start to peel if I park both of them in the garage together?

2010 Prius and paint is falling off onto the ground after each rain.

At this rate there will be more Blizzard White paint on the ground than on the car. Hope my white Lexus does not get the disease from the white Prius.

I have a 2010 Prius with the paint chipping off all over the car. There is no accident damage and/or hail. Upon looking up this problem on the internet, I understand that there is an extended warranty by Toyota for this paint color. However, it only applies to the Rav4 and the Camry. The extended warranty on the covered models expires in 2022, I believe it's in May '22.

Calling Toyota does no good because they just read a prepared statement and have no answer. If you ask why is paint covered on the Rav4 and Camry, they just say because the VIN NBR of the Prius is not included in the extended warranty. They can't explain why but only reread the statement.

Toyota has recalled practically every car with white paint for the EXACT SAME PROBLEM - Peeling paint -- but they refuse to cover the Prius. They are covering most other vehicles from 2009 and on...

We bought this car used at a Toyota dealership. After having it only a few months I noticed little chips, thinking it was just my bad luck from driving too close to trucks and gravel chipped it. Now I have peeled paint everywhere. My husband has continued to patch it, but being a Toyota owner for over 30 years I am disappointed they won't recall this. I want my van back, 2008 sienna no problems

I'm adding my voice to the list of complaints about the paint peeling on my Prius. It's been going on in a few spots on the hood for a couple of years but now the roof is really peeling and I'm concerned that I can't afford to get it fixed. It's too bad to hear that I'm not the only one. Toyota needs to step up, I had 2 Volvos and a Volkswagon older than 10 years with original paint, and peeling was not an issue with those.

Paint on roof and rear side started peeling and it got worse because of rain. Took to a paint shop. A paint specialist said that this looked like due to defective paint and or chemical issue. He suggested to search for a recall. But I could not find one, so I end up paying to fix the issue before it gets worse.

In April 2015 the referenced Toyota Prius was purchased from Sunrise Toyota North, 910 Middle Country Road, Middle Island, New York. The paint on the vehicle has begun to fail in several locations (see attachments for photographs). Several large areas of paint, in multiple locations, have separated from the layer below.

On January 10, 2016 the vehicle was brought to Sunrise Toyota North for general maintenance and to have the paint deficiency inspected by the service department. The dealer was unable to provide a reasonable explanation for the condition of the paint and recommended Toyota be contacted directly to provide a resolution.

On February 17, 2017 the vehicle was brought toa collision shop to have the condition of the paint evaluated. It was the opinion of the collision shop worker that there appears to be a deficiency with the factory paint causing the multiple failures. A quotation for the cost of required repairs was provided by the shop and as of the date of the quote the repairs were estimated at $2,464.02.

On March 22, 2017 I sent a complaint to Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.
P.O. Box 259001 Plano, TX, 75025-9001

Toyota called shortly after receiving my complaint and said to bring my car back to one of their shops. I did. The shop worker said to me that there are other Toyota Prius' having the same issue and he was hopeful it would be covered, and it looks like an issue from the factory because the finish coat didn't stick to the primer.

The Toyota dealership shop put in the complaint. A few days later I receivd another call saying there was nothing Toyota can do. It's an "older model" (keep in mind it was only 6 years old at the time).

Today, August 19, 2018, The paint continues to chip away with each rain and snow storm. Due to the expensive quote to have the paint repared, I purchased an inexpensive 3 step paint kit to try to prevent it from rusting. New chips keep appearing though.

paint peeling

Bought a used 2010 Prius with 87k miles in 2015 and soon after I noticed a couple of spots where the paint had started to peel. It's not pretty, bad with long streaks on the doors near the windows. Toyota claims it's not a factory defect. An auto body and paint technician will tell you it's a faulty primer issue. All the same Toyota will not acknowledge it. If enough people get together and file a class action suit maybe Toyota will have no choice but fix this problem.

Bought 2010 blue Prius in June 2009. First noticed glaze missing on back hatch door 6 years after purchase. Roof started peeling about 2 years ago. Dealer said I was out of warranty. Repainting bids were over $2500 for the roof with no guarantee about the rest of the car. Just wondering how many Prius vehicles have had this problem. Never had a car (owned older cars than this) that peeled like this.

The paint in the front top of the car is peeling away. This is a manufacturer defect and just because we have miles on it oh well we are not responsible says Toyota. The paint should remain a lifetime of the car not 60,000 miles. Again another issue that most Toyotas have but Toyota does not want to fix or recognize as a problem.

In the past few months the paint has begun peeling off of my 2010 Prius. The car is 10 years old and out of warranty. There is no damage to the car that would cause the paint to peel. As an example of what is happening, I recently took a trip to the beach, and rinsed the car off with a water hose to get the salt off- no pressure sprayer just the regular end of the hose- and the paint peeled in large pieces just from the water hitting it. I had the Collision Manager at the local dealer look at it an he confirmed my suspicion that the paint job is bad; it is a paint adhesion problem. The manager suggested that I call Toyota, and hope that they do the right thing and at least help to pay for the car to be repainted. Toyota refuses to take responsibility for the bad paint job because the car is out of warranty. Not that I wish bad things on other people, but I am hoping to find out if this has been a problem for anyone else. I figure it must be, because my car was not hand painted with a unique batch of paint- rather, it is one of thousands that were reproduced on a manufacturing line. If it comes to light that it is a problem with many cars of the same model, maybe Toyota will issue a recall and offer to repaint all cars with this problem.

paint peeling

I love my Prius and have had few problems. However paint has been flaking off without being hit or dinged. The car is only 7 years old. An auto paint specialist told me the problem is probably due to defective electroplate primer, causing the paint to not adhere and come off without being struck. He said the paint needs to be stripped, re-primed and re-painted. It would make me very happy if Toyota would redo the paint.

paint peeling

There are a few spots where the paint is just falling off the car. No scratches, dents or impacts, the paint is just giving up and falling off in chunks. It doesn't bubble first, but it is expanding and getting worse. Seems to reveal the gray primer underneath, but at edges it's possible for rust to get in, so I will definitely have to have it repainted. This is factory paint, no wrecks, and again, it's not related to any impact of rocks, bugs, grocery carts, etc. I've never before seen this sort of thing and have owned other cars kept in identical situations (place of work, place it's parked at night, etc.).
