Prius

  • Manual transmission
  • 110,000 miles

My Toyota Prius has not been identified as one of the models in this Class Action law suit, but approximately four months ago, at 110,000 miles, my vehicle started to burn oil excessively, causing me to have to fill it every 1,200 miles. I take it in for maintenance to the same person at the same dealership since I have owned the car new. I became aware that this issue with the piston rings impacted other Toyota models and that there had been a Class Action law suit about it. I had learned that Toyota opted for some "less expensive" manufactured piston rings, and the result was costly, as they were defective. My Toyota person indicated that some of the Prius models were also having this same issue.

This has me very concerned that other owners have been left out. Considering there are millions of Prius owners that have stood behind Toyota and the Prius as the top hybrid on the market, there needs to be something done about this. I myself cannot afford to lose a car at 110,000 miles. This is the fifth Toyota that I've owned. Unless this is done right, I really doubt, I'll ever be doing this again.

Toyota Oil Consumption Defect Class Action Lawsuit is April Lax, et al. v. Toyota Motor Corporation, et al., Case No. 14-cv-01490, in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

Prius III

  • Automatic transmission
  • 101,000 miles

My 2010 Toyota Prius has been using an excessive amount of oil for about a year now. It started when it had about 65,000 miles on it, I have been adding about 4-5 quarts between oil changes. Over the Thanksgiving holiday I drove from Alabama to North Carolina, which was about 1400 miles round trip. I filled it up with oil before I left and when I got back I checked it and it didn't even show on the stick. In 1400 miles it used that much oil!! It is ridiculous. Toyota needs to recall these cars. It's crazy to have a Toyota, a car that is supposed to last three times this long, and you have to carry a gallon of oil around with you!!! I will probably never buy another Toyota!!

Prius

  • Automatic transmission
  • 135,000 miles

Shortly after I crossed the 5-year ownership mark with my 2010 Prius (purchased new) I started having a number of problems related to the engine consuming excessive amounts of oil. I'm having to add multiple liters of oil between oil changes, which I have also increased to every 5,000 miles (per the dealership service center recommendation) rather than every 10,000 miles as recommended by the service manual and your website. I also have had to pay for several inspections to rule out possible causes and other issues.

I have done nearly every single recommended service and have faithfully and consistently brought the vehicle in every 5,000 miles as recommended. I have taken immaculate care of this vehicle and am shocked and disappointed at the oil consumption issue. The quality of this vehicle, which is not even 6 years old, should be much, much better.

I've read numerous complaints about this issue for the 2010 model on Prius community websites and this site. This is a well-documented, known issue with this model. I respectfully demanded that Toyota correct it for my vehicle. Constantly checking and adding liter after liter of oil and bumping up the frequency of my oil changes is an unacceptable solution when I have taken every possible step to ensure the longevity of my Prius.

As it stands now, if this is any indication of how Toyota vehicles hold up after only 5 years, I have no interest in purchasing another Toyota in my lifetime. Mind you, I'm a professional in my 30's and thus have many years of future purchases ahead of me.

I filed a claim with Toyota and they called me back with the expected garbage that there's nothing they can do because there's no recall or campaign to fix it. They said maybe in the future, but there's no way to know. It took them 8 or so years to decide to acknowledge the oil consumption problem with the Camry, so my car will likely be dead by then. What a load of crap!

Update from Dec 1, 2016: I called and got an offical complaint on the books with Toyota. It didn't do anything for me, but we all need to report it so that they take it seriously (it's our only shot).

So everyone having this issue please call 1 (800) 331-4331 or visit the complaint website at http://www.toyota.com/support/#!/app/ask

They did get back to me very quickly with their non-answer. But the response was quick and worth the time.

Prius 3

The car engine check light came on. Took it to the dealer and they said it was out of oil. We have the oil always changed by the dealer on schedule. The found no oil leak. The did an oil usage test and said it was in spec. We were loosing about 1 qt per 2000 miles. They said this was well with in their specification. Since then the usage has become closer to 2 quarts every 2000 miles depending on we drive the car. On long distance trips in the summer at high speed we use about 1 qt per 700 miles. The usage is much lower when we do city driving in the winter. Toyota was of no help but did say they has come cars recalled for the problem but our vin was not on the list. We have about 170000 miles on the car now and get between 38 and 41 mpg. With the stock tires were were getting about 50-52 mpg with their B traction rated tires. With A traction rated good tires we dropped the millage down to about 45 mpg. Safety to stop fast with good tires cost us about 5 mpg due to tire friction (drag). The Prius has no oil light or gauge. If you go to the a dealership for an oil change they never tell you the oil is low. You just run out and are screwed. We have a 2003 4-runner with over 200K and it uses no oil. Toyota seems to doing a cover up on this oil usage and I bet a class action suite is in order. Unless you are on the recall list a class action suite would be the only option.

Before my last oil change at 124,000 miles, I checked my oil after driving 9,000 miles and it was almost off the bottom of the stick. I added a quart. I had it changed at 125,000 miles and the dealer didn't seem to thinks it was a problem. Now I am keeping track and it looks like it will use 2 quarts per 2,000 miles. I now have 133,400 miles on the car. I drive in the West Virginia mountains and use the B on the shift lever a lot going down the mountains. I wonder if that is a factor. Now what do I do? Get it fixed? Keep driving until it gets worse? Trade it? I love the Prius but not this problem.

Well Folks,

This is it! I took it to The Toyota Dealer in Laguna Hills (now another name). They did an oil consumption test ($70+, sealed dipstick, drain plug, oil intake port), result = no help, no recalls for the problem (2010 Camry had a recall for this though). over the next few months, I took the Prius to CarMax ($7000 offer), Hybrid911 ($7000 offer), and, I advertised it in CraigsList for $8775. I had some interest, offers of $8000; 2002 Camry in trade + $5000 cash (his 14 yr. old Camry is worth $4500???) Nothing of any consequence.

Then, a nice young man from Turkey, called who seemed interested. I went out of town for 3-4 weeks, took the Prius off the market in the meanwhile. Upon my return, I reposted the ad, and the same young man surfaced. We talked for a while, he understood there was an oil consumption problem, and agreed to check the oil level frequently. I received $8200 for an otherwise $9500 car.

THANKS TOYOTA FOR BEING SUCH A SLEAZE, COSTING ME ABOUT $1300 IN LOST EQUITY. NOT ONLY WILL I NOT BUY ANOTHER TOYOTA; I'LL DO EVERYTHING IN CAN TO DISSUADE ANYBODY I KNOW WHO'S CONSIDERING A PURCHASE!!!! SO, I HOPE YOU ENJOY LIVING ON YOUR LUXURY MEGA YACHT, SIPPING CHAMPAGNE, AND LIVING OFF THE $$ OF YOUR FORMER CUSTOMERS!! THIS CONSTITUTES A BETRAYAL OF TRUST AND CONFIDENCE, AND YOU SHOULD HAVE A LESSER SHARE OF THE HBRID MARKET AS A RESULT.

The car started to burn lot of oil. Like 1 quart for every 1000 to 1200 miles. When i googled, i saw i was one in a million as already prius owners were shouting about this issue online. When i called and explained the problem to autonation dealer in tempe, he clearly understood this problem(because he faced the complaints) and he said it would cost 6000 bucks to fix. Toyota is not ready to extend the warranty for this problem. But, the dealer is ready to buy this car for just 1000 bucks. My car's current value in KBB is 7800 bucks. Toyota should fix this or the dealer shoud talk in a nice manner.

So here I am complaining about the same problem like hundreds other people , what bothers me the most is that I had no idea that this was a known problem and that there is so many complaints about this incredible car . Just like you folks I own a 2010 V generation Prius that cost me about 36000 $ when purchased it was the most expensive there was at the time and the price included the extra warranty that I got for up to 140000 miles or 7 yr whichever accrued first . I like to join all of you on this ordeal and hopefully to get this resolved with the Toyota industry I think this is ridiculous that they are suggesting to keep adding oil there is no such think this is b.....s,.We bought this car because of reliability not to find out that past 80000 miles the engine would start to burn oil .This is crazy ridiculous and we should all start a petition online asking Toyota to replace or repair the faulty engines .My Prius burns out more then a quart per 1000 miles this is unacceptable .

Little yellow triangle with explanation mark in center appeared but no writing on screen what the problem was. Then it came on and said "key not detected." So I changed key battery. Then I braked on a curve and yellow triangle came on. No explanation. I then stopped at a stop sign. Yellow triangle with explanation saying "low engine oil pressure". Went to Toyota dealer and they said their was no oil showing on dip stick. Had oil change done. The dealer recommended driving vehicle and checking oil level every 1,000 miles. They also gave me the following # 800-331-4331. Since I had to drive moving my daughter I drove 1,000 miles in a week. Took car to mechanic today and it is a quart low. He put oil in and now I get to spend $9 every 1,000 miles. I called 800# and explained problem. The guy was very nice and after being put on hold for 3 minutes he said they are working on a remedy. But he said if it is the engine or drive train I would be responsible for a fix because I am over the 60,000 miles. He gave me a complaint number and said if they would do a recall I would get an email. But if engine or tran problem I would pay the bill. What??? If they caused the problem how would I be responsible. I do have records showing that I took my car in every 10,000 miles for oil change.

Update from Aug 22, 2016: I forgot to mention. Please, Anyone with this problem must call the 800# I listed and get a complaint number. They don't know their is a problem unless you call them. The dealer doesn't call for you. Thanks

The Prius warning system was on. I took it in to have it looked at, and the garage said I had no oil. No oil leakage had been observed. The oil change was not due for another 1000 miles. This had never happened before. They changed the oil on April 20, 2016. Then 4,500 miles later on Aug. 9, 2016 The warning system came on. The garage added 3 quarts of oil, or 1 quart for every 1,507 miles. This is excessive oil consumption.

2010 Prius using excessive oil after 115,000 miles. Car has had regular maintenance by Toyota of Marina Del Rey where we purchased it new. Dealer is telling me it will need a $5000 engine rebuild because the engine rings are worn out. Reading this forum, it appears that Toyota has a quality problem with Prius at around 100,000 miles. Prius Inline 4

  • 133,000 miles

We feel our Prius is consuming excessive oil. We have had the oil changed every 5,000 miles since we purchased it new in August 2010. Just recently we have had the warning light come on in between oil changes. We went to our local service place to determine why the indicator was coming on, since we did not see any leaking under the vehicle. The technician put the car on the hoist and check for leaks, nothing under the car, however oil was coming out of the tail pipe. He told me to take the car to the dealer for further testing. I contacted Folsom Toyota and went through the oil consumption test. After <1100 miles it was consuming a qt of oil. The response from Folsom Toyota was this is within Toyota specs. and...if the vehicle burns oil excessively in the future, recommend replace the pistons, rings w/ Valve grind set to reduce consumption. No warrant coverage on this repair. This means every 1000 to 1100 miles we will need to put in a qt of oil, which runs about 10bucks a qt. And when will this reduce our gas milage on the vehicle?

Just a further note, we have already replaced the Hybrid battery on this car and the accessory battery. Toyota paid for the Hybrid battery (still under warranty at 125,000 miles).

This car is 6 years old and has around 93000 miles. The Toyota dealer told me that it will cost $13,000 to replace the engine. He did mention that some other Toyota Prius' are also seeing similar problems. However, Toyota has not issued an extended warranty. Hence, this would be an out-of-pocket expense. Even though I cannot afford to buy a new car or replace the engineer (since I am jobless), I am now forced to take this only option left for me. I have totally lost trust on Toyota.

I usually drive all my cars past 200,000 miles as I take very good care of them through proper maintenance. I noticed the Prius started going through roughly 5 additional quarts of oil between oil changes. I did a lot of research online & found plenty of others with the same problem yet Toyota never acknowledged it even though corrections were made to future years. There is no way that even a high mileage vehicle should burn that much oil. Otherwise I love the Prius and it has been good to me with no other real problems. After 6 months of burning through 3.5 qts of oil every 1000, I was told by the Toyota service center (where it has always gone) that partially rebuilding the engine would fix the consumption problem. BUT,.....not only is that FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS OUT OF MY POCKET!!!, but that since this is clearly a bad design flaw, it has yet to be redesigned, so I would be replacing bad parts, with newer bad parts!!

But, "The Camry had this same problem, and they solved it, so hopefully Toyota will do something about this"

Yes, hopefully. But WHEN? TOYOTA!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT THIS RAMPANT PROBLEM!!??? I know I am not the only one.

Meanwhile, I get to dump excessive amounts of oil in my car for who knows how long.

OR....trade in my nearly-paid-off awesome car (awesome except for the oil problem) and start of new with a $30,000 loan. hooray.

This is wrong, and Toyota should do something about it.

After my cross country trip where it was discovered that I had very low oil, no long after an oil change, I returned to the dealer where I bought and service my Prius.

Down 3.5 quarts. "That is awful!" they said. "Yes, it's low! That doesn't make sense, it was just in for an oil change." They filled it, I went on my way.
