problem #2

RAV4 Limited 3.2L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 66,000 miles

I bought the car new and have had it in the shop 4 times for the rear suspension. First two times was due to the Toyota recall. Next time I was driving to work when one of the rear suspension "recall bars" broke and the right rear tire went up in to the wheel well. Fortunately I was traveling at a slow speed or I would have been in an accident. This time I had to be towed to the shop.

I went in for an oil change at 65K miles and during the inspection, they noticed the two lines for the anti-sway bar in the rear were broken. The dealer stated it was due to corrosion. I did not but that was the entire link was broken off, no bolts left and the suspension arms were clean with no corrosion. If it were corrosion, one would expect to see it elsewhere as well. That repair was $550.

Toyota was supposed to be a quality car, I have had issue with the rear suspension of this car ever since I purchased it. Never again

RAV4 Limited V6

  • Manual transmission
  • 57,000 miles

I have never heard of a less than three year old vehicle or any vehicle having to replace a right rear tie rod end, especially one with under 58,000 miles. My wife was driving along a busy road on a rainy night, did not hit any potholes or other road hazards and was nearly killed when the tie rod broke throwing her car all over the road until finally the car's auto correction kicked in and she was able to pull over to the side of the road. I believe that several more of these are going to happen and this will become a recall issue in the near future. The warranty paid for the repairs but not the 4 wheel alignment that was required after this problem occurred. This is a nice vehicle that is loaded with options, however, the suspension is tight and one can feel every bump in the road. The type of suspension on the RAV4 is what I believe led to the broken tie rod. Something has to be done before someone is killed due to this suspension malfunction.
