problem #4

Tacoma 4x4 V6

  • Manual transmission
  • 6,000 miles

The engine will not return to idle. Engine revs between shifts. Engine always runs faster than I am going. On the brakes or on the gas. Can't gear down. This is a very unsafe vehicle.

Gets 12.5 to 14 MPG.

I hate this truck and Toyota for not fixing the problem. This is just bad software.

Tacoma Prerunner 4.0L

  • Manual transmission
  • 10,000 miles

I have driven with manual transmissions some 40+ years. The Tacoma 4.0 engine continues to rev up for about 1 second after depressing clutch to change gears. Also, when letting up on the gas pedal, the engine continues to hold its RPMs making it almost impossible to slow down to avoid an accident. The Toyota manual transmission in conjunction with the 4.0 engine doesn't make it practical to downshift for braking purposes because of high engine RPMs. With the transmission in neutral between shifting from one gear to next, the engine RPM will not go below 1200RPM. Finally, my gas mileage sucks at 18 MPG. Approximately 90-95% of my driving is on an interstate freeway. A Toyota rep advised me to install a cold air intake, but that didn't help the gas consumption.

Tacoma 2.7

  • Manual transmission
  • 10,000 miles

This a real safety problem in heavy traffic, the vehicle will not decelerate when you let off the throttle. It is hard on the brakes. When shifting up to 5th, the high rpm's slip the clutch and jerks the drive train. The engine races between shifts from 4th to 5th & 5th to 4th. I took the matter to arbitration, which I lost due to the factory rep. stating the engine is operating according to design. Poor design in my estimation. I am going to file an appeal,. As the vehicle gets older & the problem come to the public attention, the resale value is going to seriously suffer. Plus the cost of many clutch replacements is going to be very expensive. Toyota isn't looking out for their customers anymore. This the last Toyota I'll ever buy.
