Jetta

  • Automatic transmission
  • 100,000 miles

Well only half fell off, so I can still use it- just a pita to close because you have to hold in both sides to close it.

I hate that the stupid little plastic pieces break and then they cost an ridiculous amount to fix. One big SCAM!

Jetta VR6 2.8L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 100,000 miles

I know at least 4 other 99-02 Jettas that have this same problem. The hinges break and makes the glove box useless. Common-now!

problem #4

Feb 122006

Jetta GLS 1.8T

  • Manual transmission
  • 49,710 miles

same as others... glove box door fell off... hinges broke or something. To be honest I haven't even looked. I loved VW in the past... love the look of the Jetta, but everything is plastic in this car and it just doesn't hold up to Canadian winter. Water pump impeller was plastic and broke, gears in starter are plastic and broke, cup holders broke several times, arm rest storage cover broke etc. etc.

Jetta

  • Manual transmission
  • 55,000 miles

If it was just my car I probably wouldn't have said anything, but given that this has happened to others, VW should really look into doing something about it.

problem #2

(reported on)

Jetta GLS 1.9L TDI

  • Manual transmission
  • 41,632 miles

The plastic fulcrum points (hinges) on the door are not sturdy enough to bare the reasonable and weighted load of the door making them failure prone.

The opening of the door is regulated by a gas charged cylinder to govern the smooth opening of the door (so it doesn't simply fall open). Any force applied to the door while closing it that might exceed the cylinders ability to compensate will increase the load on the plastic hinges that are the fulcrum at which the door pivots.

Replacing the door is not an overly complex task and only requires a TORX screwdriver to remove the (approx.) 8 screws (and 3 clips) that hold the glove box to the dash board. However the cost of the Part is less then something to be desired at $96 CND (June, 2001). The part has since increased in price (Go figure).

The glovebox door fell off, and it's about to fall off for the 2nd time. It is extremely annoying that VW interior parts are so cheap that they just randomly break. Then they replace it for a huge price with the same cheap part you had before.
