Routan SE 3.8L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 70,000 miles

I have a 2010 VW Routan van and while I was driving my headlights went out. After reading online from other owners I knew it was the light switch. I ordered a new light switch from dealer who said that the part was on back order and it would be about 10 days. Ten days have come and gone and the part is not in. They are no longer making Routan's and it is unknown when they are going to make more parts. I can not drive at night or rain to due to not having headlights. How can this happen?

Routan S 3.8L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 67,000 miles

My girls and I are leaving a concert @ Lakewood and come out to headlights that will only flicker off and on. I beat on the fuse box under the hood and played around with switch and eventually they came back on. They work fine for a couple days, then boom, my wife goes to drive the van to work and there's no headlights again. She decides to have it seen about.

The VW dealership tells her they can't find anything wrong with it, because the lights started working again. I told her to order a new switch to see if it would fix the problem. Two days go by she takes the kids back to school shopping. They stay out all day. Start to head home and no lights. She beat on the fuse box and played with he switch until they eventually came on. Her and my girls are driving down I20 and the headlights completely go out. Now this is a Saturday night, trucks and traffic are everywhere. Thank God she made it to the side of the road without being killed. We had to have it towed home.

The switch came in and it seemed to do the trick...for a little while, but again my wife goes to go to work and has no headlights. She took it to another VW place and was told they didn't have the machinery to diagnose the Routan because it was technically a Chrysler. She then took it to the Dodge/Chrysler place. Within minutes of it being there they told her what was wrong with it.

They've had my van for almost a week now and the part still hasn't managed to make it there. They did however tell us it's going to cost $800. If you research the TIPM and the problems all Dodge Chrysler vehicles have with them, it's absolutely ridiculous. The damn only has 67,000 miles on it and this isn't even the only big ticket problem we've encountered with it. Folks, DO NOT buy a VW Routan! It's a shame that VW would even attach their name to such a p.o.s.
