Our car is actually a 1999 S70 (but your website wouldn't let me mark it as such)....We bought it used with approximately 125,000km on it. (We can't be sure what the real mileage was because the problem caused the odometer to switch off and we probably put about 5-10,000km on it before we finally got the problem fixed.) Since the car was old and long not under warranty, we were on our own. My husband finally figured out that a module was probably the problem. Because the thing was hermetically sealed, he couldn't open it to fix it (apparently if you could get the darn thing open, it was possible to repair it quite simply.) Anyways, we finally found a replacement module on the internet (Volvo doesn't make this model anymore so getting parts is not always easy.) He replaced it and bingo, no more problems.
