A4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 75,000 miles

I took my car into Audi shop to get its regular oil change back in March 2022. I had no previous issues with the car. A week after my oil change, the “add oil” light flashed on my display panel. I found this to be odd since I had just gotten the car oil changed a week prior. I called Audi. They asked me to add a quart of oil and to feel free to drop by so that they can add more oil and to see if they can figure out what the problem could be. I wasn’t able to take it in that week so I forgot about it until the next month.

I basically added 1 quart of oil on a monthly basis (estimating 400-500 miles per quart of oil, as I clocked my miles between each oil replacement). Finally was able to take my car into the Audi shop. They charged me $800 to change the oil again, to diagnose the problem and to for the first step of monitoring the oil usage. I was not happy about this but I had no other option as they could not find a leak nor did they know why it was burning oil. A week later, my car lost all 6 quarts of oil in under 450 miles! I called them immediately and they asked me to come back in so that they could run the second test.

I wrongly assumed that the second part of the test was part of the cost that I originally paid but boy was I wrong. They charged me another $240 for the second test. I basically paid the over $200 for them to tell me that my car is burning oil and that it MAY be the piston seals that are the main culprit for the oil burning so fast and gave me an estimate of over $9800 to replace the piston seals. Again, the estimate suggested that it MAY (not 100% certain) that it could solve the problem. I am extremely unhappy at this prognosis, on top of the fact that apparently this has been a problem with Audi vehicles and Audi does not want to warranty their problem. I have found online articles that many other Audi owners are dealing with the exact same thing, along with the high price to remedy the problem. I’m honestly shocked that Audi is refusing to acknowledge the problem. I will no be buying another Audi again and I will not be recommended in an Audi to anyone ever again. Extremely disappointing

A4 Allroad 2.0L 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 100,000 miles

I owned a 2009 A4 Allroad and had the same problem, starting around 75K miles. Complained about it and made sure they noted it in my service records when they initially refused there was a problem. They eventually replaced the piston rings at no cost and there was no problem after that. I later learned about the class action suit involving the A4s from that era.

In early 2016 the motor in the sunroof malfunctioned and the warranty had expired. Rather than pay over $5,000 for the repair, I traded it in for an Audi-certified former loaner/demo the dealership had, and it came with a 100K full warranty. But shortly after the warranty expired, the same problem recurred. It is now requiring me to add a quart of oil approximately every 1500 miles. I am certain it is the same piston ring problem all over again.

I have loved my Allroads and was planning to be a loyal Audi owner till the day I stop driving. But this is making me question whether I should find another manufacturer. I cannot afford an engine overhaul. I have not yet requested an oil consumption test from the dealer.
