Right at around 90k miles, had a coolant leak and took me several months to diagnose the source of the leak. Turned out to be the water pump right at the inlet hose for the cooling system into the water pump. Since it was hidden under the intake manifold, it was very hard to nail down the source of the leak. I was able to fix it myself for roughly $700 and several days of labor. If I had taken it to a shop, it easily would have been upwards of $1500 if I had taken it to a stealership.
I had the same issue on my 2014 VW GTI with roughly 75k miles. This is an issue that the VW group knows about and they keep using plastic water pumps that crap the bed like clockwork after the warranty is up. Design a better water pump please! And fix the timing chain tensioner while you're at it!
