While driving down the road, a loud metal to road noise started to emanate from the bottom of my vehicle. After pulling over and examining the underside of my vehicle, I could see the fuel tank strap on the right side of the vehicle dragging against the ground and the fuel tank hanging down from its normal position. The strap had separated from its front retention point. A thorough inspection revealed that the front mounting bracket for the fuel tank strap was no longer on the vehicle. The bracket had separated from the vehicle. This bracket appears to be spot welded to the frame. In this case, metal was missing from the frame at the weld points as if the welds were intact but the metal around the perimeter of the welds had yielded and failed. This appears to be a metal fatigue issue of the frame surrounding the weld points of the right side, fuel tank strap, front mounting bracket. This vehicle has been located in phoenix since new and has no signs of rust or operation induced damage to the frame or structure in this area.
