Started car in the morning to no AC. Took to dealer, turns out to be the evaporator coil which requires the whole dash to be removed. $1,900 in parts, $1,000 labor, 15 days to order parts & 3 days to repair. Car will not hold a Freon charge more than a couple of hours plus you will smell Freon inside the car. You work to buy nice things just for those things to cost you even more money in maintenance when the cheap parts break. In my 25 years of owning vehicles this is the most expensive repair I've ever had with any brand. If your looking at buying this car used ask to see the maintenance records and hope this part has already been replaced and I'll hope this new one last longer than 40,000 miles.
Update from Oct 8, 2016: Part did take 15 days to arrive, but only 2 days to install. BMW provided a loaner for the 2 days it took to install new part. Total cost (labor & parts) ended up being $2,100 vs the quoted $3,000 which is still nuts. In the end this did not turn out to be the most expensive repair I've had on a vehicle, the winner of that was my old 2004 Silverado when the Trans blew at 39,000 miles.
