The contact owns a 2011 BMW 328I. The contact stated that upon driving from a complete stop, the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed the dealer where it was diagnosed that the camshaft adjuster bolts had backed out, causing the camshaft VANOS failure. Additionally, it was diagnosed that the camshaft VANOS and camshaft adjuster bolts needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 84,500.

The contact owns a 2011 BMW 328I. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle made rattling noises with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the Vanos housing bolts had fractured and detached into the oil pan, causing damage to the engine. The dealer informed the contact that both of the variable camshaft timing adjustment (VANOS) units needed to be replaced and the oil pan needed to be filtered. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.
