Leased a brand new 328xi 2016 with M package two months ago. While driving at about 40km/hour, the car suddenly lost all power, every needle on dash went to 0, all warning signals flashed on dashboard, loss of acceleration and power steering. This lasted about 5 seconds. The car suddenly turned back on again for about 10 seconds and shut off again and turned back on again. I was able to pull to the side of the road, shut the car down and restart it at which point nothing was flashing on dashboard.
I brought the car to the BMW dealership and the car did not fault on the drive there either. They could not identify the problem. The car's computer had not logged any trouble or error.
The dealership called BMW Canada central and sent my computer data. They informed them that the car programming had not been updated and that there were several cases where this had happened. They reprogrammed the computer on the car. They said that was the problem.
However, is it really a programming bug that makes you lose all power to the car? I find this very difficult to believe. Why was the car not updated is this was known issue? What if I had been on the highway? We have -40 degree celcius temperatures where I live, inches of snow, ice, hail you name it.
What about the known issues in the past with the Fuel Pump? They assured me it couldn't be from that. I got the car back a couple of days ago, no loaner was provided. I'm going to bring it into the dealer where I actually leased the car to have it rechecked again.
In any event, if there is a computer bug that makes your car shut down, all people with that car should be notified for it to be corrected. And if occurred to other people, why is there nowhere on the internet any complaints or notices about this problem?
I decided to go with another BMW after leasing 2 in the past where I had no problems, despite advise to the contrary. Two months into my 4 year lease and I'm wondering what problems I will have and if I will die in this car driving it.
Let us see if the bug fix will actually work.
