A lot of BMW X1 and X2s along with some Mini Coopers have an issue with a small spring inside the shifter. The spring arm breaks causing the vehicle not to register that it is in park. This is a small inexpensive part that almost always is the cause of this warning. The dealers want to charge you for a new shifter which is $600+ and labor on top of that for a part that can be replace for under $20 and a couple hours for installation. I do not understand why this is not a recall at this point with the number of vehicles that have been affected and the cost of a dealer to fix it to what the actual part is to replace.

It has the following error message: Transmission Secure vehicle with parking brake when stopped. Consult service center. code #420106 This problem has been widely reported on BMW internet sites and is apparently due to a small broken spring in the transmission gear selector assy. The spring apparently costs less than $10 and takes about 4 hrs of labor to replace. I just got a quote from the BMW dealer who said they had to replace the entire shifter assy which cost $3000+ including labor. It is apparently a safety issue because the transmission does not know whether it is in park even though it clearly is. BMW should recall as it is clearly due to design flaw and material used for the spring.
