coolant leak coolant leak coolant leak coolant leak coolant leak

2019 BMW X3 with B46 engine experienced major cooling system failure at approximately 80,000 miles. Vehicle displayed low coolant warning and coolant was visibly leaking underneath the vehicle. Around the same time, excessive white steam/exhaust began occurring during cold starts, and the vehicle unexpectedly required engine oil between oil changes for the first time since ownership.

Independent repair facility pressure-tested the cooling system and discovered multiple coolant leaks from plastic cooling system components. After replacing one failed hose, additional leaks immediately appeared elsewhere in the system during testing. Repair technician stated the “entire cooling circuit is plastic” and that the plastic components appear to be deteriorating and cracking throughout the system.

Technician specifically identified a likely leak from the oil filter housing assembly located at the rear of the engine and advised that aluminum aftermarket replacement versions exist because the factory plastic housings are known to crack and leak. Photographs document visible cracking, coolant residue, and deterioration of multiple plastic cooling system components.

Technician advised this type of widespread plastic cooling system failure is highly unusual and expressed concern the engine may have overheated prior to discovery of the leaks. Vehicle had no significant warning indicators prior to the coolant warning despite the apparent deterioration of critical engine cooling components.

This appears to be a premature failure of critical plastic engine cooling system parts under normal operating conditions and raises concerns regarding overheating risk, engine damage, sudden coolant loss, and overall vehicle safety. Repair estimates continue to increase as additional failed plastic cooling components are discovered during inspection.

I have photographs, repair documentation, and detailed diagnostic notes from the repair facility available upon request. The failures also appear consistent with widespread owner complaints and ongoing litigation involving BMW B46/B48 engine cooling system and oil filter housing defects.
