X5 Sport 4.4L V8

The rear license plate lights are incorporated into the electrical assembly that also incorporates the switch for opening the rear hatch. For some reason, rain water moisture and condensation will leak into this unit causing water corrosion eating away at all the metal.

The solution: Cut off the corroded wiring harness and soldier in a new one. All the wire pins will be so corroded that if you attempt to disconnect the OEM harness, the wire pins will snap off of the base of the male connector.
