X5 M 4.4L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 49,800 miles

After accelerating like a gentleman (slowly) from a stop sign, the X5M abruptly shut off, without warning, and put itself into neutral . (No warning lights, no smoke or smell of any kind). The car would not start despite multiple attempts using a jump start from the tow company.

The car was then towed to a BMW dealership where they determined an engine replacement was necessary because it appeared seized. (They could not turn the engine using a breaker bar with the belt off.) The dealership quoted $34,000 for a new S63 engine including install & a free coffee. No help what so ever from BMWUSA. No further investigation was done.

The car was running: - castrol 5w-30, - regular oil & filter changes every 5,000 miles - was never modified - all the fuel injectors changed by the dealership under a recall 1 year before the vehicle died

After sitting for almost 2 years, the car has been sent to Miami Engines for an engine rebuild. The engine is currently being rebuilt & the mechanics working on the car have said there was metal in the oil filter. Possibly a spun bearing. Will know the reason for the engine prematurely dying in the next week or so.

X5 50iXdrive N63 4.4L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 75,160 miles

My 2012 X5 50i xdrive with 75,160 miles went into low power mode for the second time in 2 weeks. First time was to replace the high pressure fuel pumps for $1500.00. This time the initial diagnosis was problems with the VANOs system estimate $2500.00. then when they started working on the vehicle that changed to metal in the oil, so needed a new rebuilt engine. Estimated at $15,000 for the engine and $3000 to $5000 for labor. Every time I took this Vehicle in for service the service reps and tech's would tell me that this is a problematic engine and would have lots of problems, they were right. This vehicle had already had the "Customer Service Package" completed B001314 that was supposed to fix the N63 engine problems at approx. 37000 miles, I bought it at 39000 miles. I called BMW USA and asked if they could assist in any way with the repair. Since I bought the vehicle from a third party they denied my request for assistance. This was a beautiful vehicle that looked perfect, the BMW dealer found a buyer which helped a small amount with the offset of what I owed on the 2012, so that I could purchase a different used CPO BMW. I am not upset with my dealer I am extremely disappointed in BMW.
