i3 GigaWorld (top) Electric

  • CVT transmission
  • 5,000 miles

The camera based Cruise Control is not reliable. It disengages if it is clear, raining, sunny, cloudy, daytime, nighttime, and whenever it feels like it.

I have taken it to BMW repair. They check it, say nothing is wrong, and that the system is working correctly!

There is no common denominator to all the times the cruise control disengaged itself and it has done this dozens of times over the two years I've leased it. I have a Chrysler with a similar system and it has NEVER failed to function correctly after having traveled the same number of miles as the i3.

I believe the i3's camera-based system is the problem. The Chrysler uses a radar-based system. As proof, when I am driving into the setting sun, the i3's Cruise control will always disengage since (I believe) it is "blinded" by the light of the sun. It disengages in heavy rain because it cannot see through the rain. Heck, even on a clear day around noon, the system has at least a 50-50 chance of disengaging... just because! I wish I were joking but I am not! It disengaged on a "perfect" summer day for no apparent reason.

I'm not too impressed with BMW's technology... especially as we head toward a future of autonomous driving...

i3 Electric With Range Exten

  • Automatic transmission
  • 2,000 miles

Continuing problem with the adaptive cruise control. Shutting off on the freeway. Shutting off while going under over passes. Shutting off while driving next to semi trucks. This is an on going issue that BMW has no solution to. I have had the car in 3 times for this specific issue. They can repeat the problem but can not resolve it.
