About These NHTSA Complaints:
The NHTSA is the US gov't agency tasked with vehicle safety. Complaints can be spread across multiple & redundant categories, & are not organized by problem. See the Back button — blue bar at the very top of the page — to explore more.
The car has a feature where the side view mirrors fold up when parked. Occasionally when unlocking and starting the car the driver side mirrors don-??t fold out, and can-??t be manually over ridden. This isn-??t noticed till already driving and creates a safety hazard when switching lanes.

The vehicle drivetrain failed and would not allow the driver to change gear, either to drive forward or backward. The vehicle engine was still on. The vehicle computer system generated the following message on the dashboard: "Drive carefully. Drivetrain fault. Have the problem checked by the nearest service center. Contact service center." There was an option to "Close message" at the bottom of the screen. The vehicle was stalled in the middle of the street. It took almost 30 minutes before the gear box inside the vehicle could be manipulated and shifted to drive, neutral, and reverse. The vehicle was towed away to the dealer. The mechanics at the dealership reported that there were metal debris in the rear motor that needed to be cleaned. New brushes were installed. I remained concerned about my safety and the safety of other drivers of similar models.

I had an accident at a school pickup line. The car was on B mode completely stopped and it lurched forward all of sudden unfortunately at the exact moment when a girl was putting her backpack into her mother's car's trunk. Our IX hit the girl and the two cars parked in front of us. She was severely injured. Her mother repoerted some injury later.

I just purchased a 2023 BMW iX xDrive50 and have identified a safety hazard. The car has a feature that automatically locks or unlocks the vehicle when approaching or leaving the vehicle with a key. There have been two occasions, when I had just put my toddler in his car seat, that the doors locked when I shut the door. My purse with key and phone were also inside the car. The car locked because the second keyholder, my partner, was leaving our home at the same time and had the second key on him. I had no way to unlock the car and get to my son. Fortunately, I was able to flag down my partner both times before he drove off. I find this to be quite dangerous as I would have had no way to get my son out of the locked car easily or call for help if he had driven off. I would like to see this issue reported to BMW and corrected. The VIN is [XXX]. Please let me know if I can provide additional details on this issue. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

My BMW IX accelerates on its own without me pushing the pedal. It happens randomly and without warning. Sometimes it happens as I am taking off from a traffic light or a stop sign. I barely push the accelerator to start going and the car all of a sudden accelerates rapidly. I take my foot off the accelerator but it still continues to accelerate. Braking stops it. As it happens randomly, I sincerely doubt the dealership can reproduce this by a test drive. I think it is a software problem and a dangerous one at that. I can imagine that this could lead to disastrous consequences. I have been reading online that it has happened to other BMW IX drivers as well. I hope they have also reported this to NHTSA. It just happened to me today (3/16/2023) again and has happened to me at least in two other instances.

My 1 week old iX had an unfortunate accident. I was backing it into the garage using the Recorded Path. This path has been used successfully multiple times since I got the car. Yesterday, while the car was steering into the garage, instead of steering onto the garage, it backed up straight into the wall opening, damaging the rear bumper and the garage wall. The garage wall moved in about 2-3 inches rendering the garage door inoperable. The CAR SENSORS DIDN-??T STOP THE CAR although it was very clear it was heading for an obstacle, THE HOUSE WALL. Initially, I didn-??t realize the magnitude of the damage, I drove the car forward, repositioned it and re-engaged the recorded path back up maneuverb, which the car carried our successfully this second time. It-??s when I exited I realized the magnitude of the damage to the car and house. The sensors on the car did not stop the car nor did they alert. Any one experienced this problem. This maneuver doesn't required driver attention since it is meant to be operated remotely from the My BMW app. However, in this incident I was in the vehicle and ass attentive as I could. The car back up so fast to be stopped and there were no warnings. The vehicle has a drive recorder but I do not know if it records these incidents and where it captured it. I filed a report with USAA both for vehicle and home damage.
