I was also fortunate that I was driving in light traffic when the car stalled out, losing all power including the power steering which made it hard to get the car off the road on the right hand side since I was attempting to make a left hand turn when it died. It could have been a disaster since the area speed limit was 55, and my turn was after a curve. Luckily my sister rescued me and AAA towed my car to the dealers. I had been trying to get my car in for the recall, but they said they didn't have the part yet to fix it. I was on a waiting list, and they were going to call me. They had the part that day.

Car would shut off during driving on several occasions both before and after the recall. It has now occurred on at least 5 separate occasions since the recall. Took the car into the Buick Dealer and the car stalled on the service manager as he was driving it into the service garage. After a couple of days, they replaced the battery and called it a day. After that the car stalled on two more occasions. Took it back to the dealer. They could not replicate the problem and gave the car back to us with nothing done. We are afraid to drive the car at this point.
PS. The information provided is correct. This is a 2008 car with only 13,600 miles on it as it was inherited and previously owned by a couple who were in their 90's and drove around town for several years. Another poster suggested that a similar problem was solved by replacing the ignition control module. When we had this problem checked out at the dealership, no diagnostic codes were present. I am wondering how the other poster diagnosed the problem and if in fact that solved the problem.

This was a failure of the ignition control module, not the ignition switch, as in the current recalls. However, the effect was exactly the same: cruising down the highway (downhill, fortunately), lost power steering, pulled over and found that the engine was dead and would not restart. I was extremely fortunate in the location and conditions under which this occurred. It could just as easily have resulted in a serious accident. The car had to be towed, but the shop went to extra effort to get the part and replace it the same day, in advance of Labor Day weekend. Most of the expense was the part; labor only .5 hour.

Similar to other complaints regarding the LaCrosse Buick, the Reduced Power warning light would come on, while my 87 year old mother was driving and the car would stall. If turned off and back on, it would restart. Then one day it had to be towed to the Buick Dealer. They first replaced shorted ignition modules and ignition wires ($878). On the test drive, the car died and towed back to the dealer.
The dealer determined it was the transmission costing $3,756.25. When my mother picked up the car and drove 2 blocks away, the car died again with the same identical problem she had from the beginning"Reduced Power" and the car was towed back to the dealer. This time it was diagnosed as faulty accelerator pedal for another $139.
I strongly believe the dealer misdiagnosed the problem and took advantage of an elderly women. You don't put in a new transmission, drive away and have the car die. We strongly believe it was a faulty accelerator pedal from the beginning. Both Buick Corporation and the dealer have received letters from us trying to resolve our differences but we have been informed there would be no reimbursement EVEN after the dealer informed us they made a mistake on the invoice and she would receive a $700 credit and the check would be received any day. That never happened.
I would love to get opinions from other people. Do you think the dealer misdiagnosed the problem? If it really was a transmission problem, and she drove away without any problems, I wouldn't be complaining. But how would you feel in this situation? Would you trust the dealer? Anxious to hear what you think.
