Vehicle experiencing intermittent stalling at highway speeds, vehicle will restart and will stall again usually within one mile, dealer finally detected the problem as the fuel pump.

Original fuel pump was replaced 09/99 at approximately 37,000 miles. Second fuel pump replaced 11/01 at 48,343 miles. Both failures occurred after the hot wire inside the tank and attached to the fuel pump motor over heated, melted the wiring insulation and scorched the assembly housing and connectors. On the first failure the wire burned completely in to and the pump stopped suddenly. The present failure began intermittently and then failed permanently. It initially failed in heavy traffic on the freeway.

While drivinmg 70 mph vehicle stalled. Vehicle taken to dealer who determined that motor of fuel pump got hot and melted wires, causing vehicle to stall. Dealer replaced fuel pump. This happened once before in November, 1999.
