Astro Van

  • 80,000 miles
The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Astro. The contact stated when braking on any uneven road surface, the anti-lock brake system would activate independently with the illumination of the ABS warning light making it difficult to stop the vehicle. The contact stated that the vehicle was involved in three separate crashes as a result of the failure. On one occasion while traveling 45 mph, the brakes were applied abruptly but did not respond and the contact crashed into another vehicle. There was one reported injury and a police report was filed. The contact stated that the ABS was activated at the time of the crash. The failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage 151,000.

Astro Van 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 90,000 miles
My 2000 Chevrolet Astro van with all wheel drive intermittently fails to stop at low speeds due to inappropriate activation of the anti lock braking system. This condition has nearly resulted in several accidents that jeopardized the safety of people and property, such as when traveling in parking lots and crowded city streets. The ABS system failure does not register a service code, and the problem was not recognized by service department at the local GM dealership, who replaced transfer case fluid in the absence of having a clue. Through self diagnosis, the problem was confirmed to be the ABS sytem because the brakes operate normally when the fuse is removed from the wiring block slot labeled ABS. Due to the absence of any physical damage to the vehicle, and the failure of the vehicles diagnostic system to detect this proble, it is clearly a defect in the vehicle or components design or construction. Owners should not have to pull fuses on safety system in order for the brakes to work when necessary. NHTSA should evaluate the aggregate number of complaints already issued with this problem, and understand that the GM trained service technicians are not helping owners remedy or understand this defect exists. A recall notice should be issued.

: the contact stated the ABS activates at speeds below 5 mph. This causes an excessive stopping distance. There is a NHTSA recall, # 05V379000, regarding the antilock brakes. The vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however, it is not included in the recall due to the VIN. Updated 4/11/2006 -

1) several times (~10) in the past few weeks when we're almost to a stop (~ 5mph) the ABS kicks in and it feels like we're losing braking power 2) we have been able to stop, but it feels like a crash is bound to happen 3) independent mechanic indicates computer code telling loss of wheel speed GM has a recall of the front wheel hub/bearing assembly for exactly this reason - but it doesn't include the Astro - only "trucks" - why not the Astro"?" it's basically the same vehicle.

Astro Van 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 81,803 miles
The contacts stated that the ABS activated at low speeds when applying brake pressure. Took the vehicle to a dealer, who discovered a failure within the wheel speed sensors, and those were replaced. About 25000 miles later the problem returned. The dealer performed a diagnostic test, but the dealer could not detect a code. The contact continued to experience an intermittent activation at low speeds. No further repairs have been made.

The check engine light comes on and off. The ABS system activates while driving on the highway. Also, the ABS light comes on. It does this off and on by itself. This started on August 1, 2005. There is a recall, Chevrolet is still recalling, but not sure at this time if consumer's vehicle is included.

Astro Van 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 94,650 miles
When I apply brakes while driving at slow speeds (about 10 mph), the anti-lock braking system engages. This greatly increases the stopping distance, and gives the feeling that the vehicle may not stop as intended. This failure can also cause the vehicle to "pull" to left or right during the application of the brakes.

The consumer stated his wife put her foot on the brake and it did not stop; it accelerated when she hit the brake and she hit two parked cars on 7-23-05. She was going approx. 3-5 mph. This is not the first time this has happened. Previously, they had felt some pulsating in the pedal, but it became progressively worse. This is the first time they have felt it accelerate. No lights came on prior to this or previously. This occurred during normal braking, on a dry road.

I attempted to stop behind a car making a turn. As I depressed the brakes there was no response, the pedal went to the floor. After I purchased the van I had taken the van to the dealer about the brakes were not right, but I was told that was the ABS brakes were like that. Later I took it again in the winter when I checked the brakes on snow. The brakes were making a grinding sound--again the dealer said that's normal. I am not driving it now because I feel it is unsafe. After several calls to GM allegation department I have not heard from them about air bags that did not deploy. This accident with the van involved two other cars and injuries to two people. I have seen several 2000 Astro vans have the same problems submitted to your web page. They too are afraid of driving the vans. We need help.;
