I purchased this 2002 Avalanche Z66 new when it first came out. I do not drive it much. It's in immaculate condition. I drive smoothly and do not have to brake suddenly. I do not ride the brakes. I know how costly a brake repair job can be. On 12-22-05 I took it for the required initial NJ State Inspection and it failed for Insufficient Brake Pedal Reserve.
On 12-23-05, a day after the failed inspection and hoping to also correct the above problem as I thought they could be related, I took it to the Chevy dealer for a RECALL. GM had decided to correct a defect that permitted corrosion to occur between the front hub/bearing assembly and the wheel speed sensor in vehicles located in severe corrosion areas. Quote from the RECALL notice "If the brakes are applied while the vehicle is traveling at a speed of greater than 3 mph but less than 10 mph, the corrosion may cause and unwanted anti-lock brake system (ABS) activation. If this condition occurred where stopping distance is limited, a crash could occur."
After consulting with several sources I wrote to Chevy Customer Relations to seek some help in solving this UNUSUAL problem. They responded with a file number and instructions to take the Avalanche to a dealer to have the brake system analyzed. The dealer's report indicates rust and corrosion in the rotors and recommends both the front and rear rotors and pads be replaced and bleed and flush the brake fluid. The total cost $1325.
I am following this up with GM. I want to know if they are willing to stand by the fact that their GM Original Manufactured brake system rotors and pads are only good for 12,000 miles and that their vehicles should not be sold in severe corrosion areas because this could render the brakes to fail.
I will post the results of my situation when I get GM's response.

I think 2 sets of brakes in 110,000 km is ridiculous. Especially when it also involves bad ball joints, bad wheel bearings and bad steering column noise. And Buz Hargrove wonders why the North Amercian Auto industry is in deep trouble ......$50,000 piece of junk!
